Hi everybody

a new game where i play Japan against Emek, very good player, fan of great and sudden strikes (as i am[:D])

We are playing with the mod Rom 175.0 (1st version)
This AAR will be forbidden to my opponent.

I am going to try to write in english BUT sorry, all screens will be in french as this AAR is already begun on french forum.
I hope it won't ruin your pleasure.

The options are:

Allied Sub Doctrine: Yes
Japanese Sub Doctrine: Yes
Fog of War: Yes
Advanced Weather Effects: Yes
Allied Damage Controle: Yes
Historical First Turn: No
Player Def. Upgrades: Yes
Vary Set Up: No
December 7th Surprise: Yes
Reinforcement: Historical (Fixed)
Sub Auto: No
Turn Cycle: 1

With the following HR:

HR for the first turn to simulate an historical start but with a random result:

Allied: Nothing to do concerning ground, air and naval units, no movement, no transfert, no upgrade, no get pilot, all planes (green and blue) "stand down", no TF creation (you don't touch at the TF already in place), no replacement, no construction, ... . Only on exception: The air groups of Malaya and China can be activated.

Japanese: KB must do the raid on PH (i.e. no naval attack on Enterprise ou Lady Lex); no other port attack except on Honk-Hong; only historical naval landing authorized, less possible but no more: Singora, Khota Bahru, Vigan, Aparri, Bataan Island, Legaspy, Guam, Wake, Makin. Combat or bombardement TF can follow of course. The japanese can create others TF but only for movement between japanese bases. Complete freedom with the SS, but i won't place them under the US CV.

and those for the rest of the game:

1) Any type of air training with a restriction:
"Beyond experience of 70, any fighter or fighter-bomber group must perform only fighter mission
(CAP, LRCAP, Escort, Sweep) or naval attack"

10) no more 500 planes in the same hex on board ships (are only concerned in the calculus plane on CV, CVL and CVE)
11) these 2 limitations are cumulative

Although they don't appear here, i will of course apply the rule which forbidd me to put other plane than A5M, A6M and A7M on board CV.

PS: i hope my english is not too bad.

My French is mostly rubbish, having cheated in French class at school to get less than spectacular results, this trend has continued into the modern day as I now continue to cheat by using FoxLingo (Addon to Firefox) to translate most of the pages into English and I'm fine...  Some good info and AAR's on the Italian/French/Czech/Polish sites ...

Good to see you joining this forum with an AAR, Rominet.

December 7th 1941

Communication of the Tokyo's headquarter:

" From about 6 months, the allied nations, USA first, have imposed an unfair embargo on us, particularly
for oil. This was an intolerable situation, our own oil reserves decreasing each day. Our governement bravely
decided to go into action and to take by legitim force what should be ours. The december 7th 1941, we inform
our citizens that the state of war between the Japan and USA-Great Britain exits"

*Center Pacific
Our operations have spectacularly begun this morning
by a massive raid on the air and naval base of Pearl Harbor.
As our Zero fighters were bombing and strafing the airfields, our
bombers Val and Kate were stricking the US fleet.

1st week of war:

*Center Pacific:
KB is going home. The AV Wright is on his way and finishes her job here.

Now Wake. 3 TF are converging against the atoll.
KB for air support in case of US CV interception.
A bombardment fleet from Marcus island.
And finally, the invasion fleet from Kwajalein.
Rendez vous the december 20th.

In the same time, Tarawa is captured.

*South Pacific:
Nothing special except the capture of Wewak and Aitape in New Guinea.

*Molucca and Celebes seas:
After the surprise attack of Philippines and neutralisation of its airfiels, this is the general mad rush
for ennemy ships.
Many SS have been placed in the Macassar strait but it is not this way chosen by my opponent.
Indeed, it appears quickly that many allied ships try an escape via Molucca sea.

From Palau base, i have 2 CVL: the Ryujo and the Zuiho.

But, among 46 fighters on board, only 18 are Zeros. The others are the obsolescent A5M4 Claude, i have to be cautious.
In fact, the Dutch T.IV are the more dangerous for the CV.

During night, a bombardment TF arrives at Menado which is completely destroyed.
With this airfield KO, ours CVL will be able to make a real slaughter during nearly 1 week.

Image
(in red: "after a deadly raid on Cagayan, Tanaka's TF intercepts many ships")

More than 20 planes are destroyed at Cagayan by Tanaka's fleet. On his way to the south, some dispersed ships are met and sunk
but the slaughter reaches its highest point during night of december 12-13 where a complete transport fleet is attacked.

After 1 week (we are the december 16th), the ennemy ships have disappeared and the balanced sheet is good.

From the beginning of the war, 67 ennemy ships have been sunk and we only lost ... 4 Kate and 1 Jake during this raid.
Yamagutchi choose to stop the pursuit; he doesn't want to go near Amboina and Kendari bases

Our forces take profit of this operation to capture Menado whose airfield is quickly repaired.

Our troops have captured Khota Bharu and Alor Star but the is no merit. Indeed, Emek is withdrawing his army towards Singapour.
Furthermore, he has concentrated here most of his fighters.
Our bombardement aviation takes profits of this by making attacks where there are no fighters in that moment: Rangoon.

Hey,

nice read (except for me being unable to translate some of that french in the screenshots [:D])

retreating KB towards wake will give the allied CV's a free shot at kwajalijn in the first couple of weeks, have they been spotted somewhere,
or are they still prepping in the dark?

and i noticed that you didn't take a lvl 4 airfield in the DEI (Jolo, Kuching or Amboina)
taking one of those will limit his ability to move in the frontlines with his shipping, because of torpedo attacks,
until this is a fact, its possible that you run into surface TF's of the enemy since they aren't under any threat.

Any plans to do so on the short term?

Quid of naval transport

One of the main difficulty of this mod is the gestion of cargo ships and freighters. Indeed, contrary to usual games, many ships are required to carry 1 division and we are quickly limited in this domain.

The situation at the beginning of this war is as follow:

Insulary Japan needs a lot of oil of course and resources but at a smaller rate (there are some productions in home country).

*For the moment, there is no trouble with oil as there is a good reserve in Japan.
10% of the needs is produced in home country, 20% is coming from China and Manchouria via Tienstin, Heijo and Fusan.
The number of TK/AO is so widely satisfactory at the beginning.

* For resources, there is also a good reserve in Japan but the trouble is coming from the fact that AK are used not only to carry resources but also supply and troops.

First, there are the offensives to do.

Second, to support offensives, a lot of supply is needed and all supply or nearly is coming from Japan itself.
(For example, in this mod, there are nearly no more resource center in Dutch Indies, so no more free supply in this area)

Third, Japan needs a lot of resources for its industry.

For now, i am going to do historic operations. I must capture the oil centers of Dutch Indies, it is my priority.

Our start bases (Indochina, Formosa, Palau, Truk, Kwajalein) have enough troops, supply for some weeks but no more.
So, i have to think NOW to send supply from Japan to these bases.

The first day of war, i gave orders to all freighters non used in current operation to rally Osaka, so i have a lot of ships (especially AK) in Japan.
The main japanese bases which are producing supply are Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya.
So, quickly, some TF with 20000 or 30000 supply points are sent towards Palau, Saigon, Takao.
Moreover, the 56th division is loaded at Osaka towards Malaya for the offensive against Singapour.

Image

Now, i still have some AK at Osaka. What should i do with them?

There are some japanese troops in Japan and China i can load.
The 31th and 33th division at Shanghai, the 2nd and logistical troops at Osaka.

Image

The trouble is that i didn't decided yet which will be their objectives.
Anyway, i don't have enough AK to carry one division.

The solution i choose is the following:

the remaining AK in Japan will be used to carry resources for heavy industries in Japan
the goal being to keep in Japan a big reserve of resources
.

Now, main resources are coming from China and Manchouria via Port Arthur but also Heijo and Changkufeng and a little bit from Indochina-Formosa.
So, the distances are quite small. They will always be near Japan.
The AK could also change their mission. If there is needs of supply or troops somewhere in Pacific, they could quickly stop their resources transport and carry supply or troops.
This point is very important because it gives me a good reaction capacity.

Moreover, one day, i will capture oil centers of Dutch Indies.
I don't know in which state.
I prefer to prepare myself to the worst, for example with Palembang's center completely destroyed
(which occurs in my last game against Emek tm.asp?m=1872758 )

The full repairing of Palembang would require each day, 4000 supplies during 250 days, for a total of 1000000 supply points.[X(]

A lot of AK would also be required for this huge task. If i did well before and if i have still a good reserve of resources in Japan, it would be possible with those free AK.

Image
(in purple: "resource convoys toward Japan"
in yellow: "supply convoys from Japan")

Now, there is still a trouble of organisation, i should say, of optimisation.
In fact, with this mod (bases on CHS 155), there is an incredible freighter diversity, the biggest (3400), the smallest (500), the quickest (23), the slowest (10).
And, at the beginnig, all are mixed

The doctrine i will use is:

first, the biggest freighters OR the quickest must stay safe. They will be used only inside the Japan empire, i.e. between japanese bases.
The smallest and the slowest will be used for invasions or for supply of bases on the border.

For example, the small AK of 500 or 700 will be perfect to supply Marshall and Gilbert islands from Kwajalein or Truk.

Second, i have to optimize the time of transit between bases.
I will proceed to a kind of homogenization of transport TF.
Approximatively the same cargos, with same speed and same capacity together.

For the speed, the reason is clear.
For the capacity, i would say that it is a pity to have some 3000 unloading and in the same time, 1200 doing nothing.

The screen above shows an example with the 56th division loaded in transport with about same speed and capacity.

An other example here, where, after only some days, i managed to have 9 of 11 AK (3400) in the same TF for resources transport from Port Arthur to Osaka.

Image

As we can see, it is a quite quick TF and homogeneous.
When this TF will arrive at Osaka, it can change its mission, combined with others freighters to carry troops elsewhere or continue to transport resources from Manchouria.

In some days, a big gathering of freighters should occur at Takao, actual sea communication center of the empire, to create homogeneous transport TF.

Hi

no, i don't see any US CV near Marshall island, they probably retreat towars south.
And Kwajalein has some Zero and Nell; only one torpedo in the Enterprise would be
a victory for me even if i lose 50 planes.

In Dutch Indies, i am cautious. All the naval invasions have great cover with the small KB and big surface combat TF and i have sent many eng at Menado; in some days, the airfield will reach the level 4.

Kuching will be the object of a complete operation later.
I don't have enough freighter to both reinforce my present invasions
and make other's one at this moment.

Malaya/Burma operations

The objective of Malaya's campaign is Singapour of course.
Singapour is a major base, big port with a repair ship yard and a lot of airfields. Moreover, there is no malaria.

From a strategic point of wiew, this base allows invasion operations toward Indian ocean or at the opposite toward Dutch Indies.
Its capture is essential for us to go further.

On the other side, there is Rangoon, main Burma's port from where the ennemy may take us from the rear and isolate Malaya from Indochina.
The control of this port is very important.

As i previously said, in Malaya, Emek has retreated his troops toward Singapour. This is a trouble for me.
Indeed, he might perhaps build fortifications in the town.
Moreover, i want to stop him to evacuate some indian or british troops from Malaya to Java or Sumatra.
I must proceed to the air bombardment of the town. All IJA 2E have progressively to be concentrated at Khota Bharu (level 6).

During this laps of time, Rangoon and Moulmein's airfields are striked by bombers to stop fortifications too.
Perhaps, it will delay the ennemy air transfert from Sumatra to Burma.

Image

The immediate results is that ennemy aviation retreats toward Calcutta in India.

Back to Malaya!
I have to be quick. The number of fighters is increasing each day at Singapour. Even Dutch planes have been detected.

Image

The december 18th, the raids on Rangoon are ending and the bombers Lilys and Sally, after one day rest, are transferred to Khota Bharu.
They are going to be replaced by dive bombers (Sonia, Ida, Mary, ...) from our new base of Rahaeng.
Moreover, some rookie Nell's groups will fly from Bangkok and hit Rangoon and Moulmein to maintain the dammage on these airfields.

Image

Before to attack Singapour, i must clear the sky of ennemy fighters.

But which fighter to use?

The Ki-27 Nate, NO! Its range is too short, its weapons too light (2x7.7mm) despite its incredible manuever (37).

Finally, my choice will be for the A6M2 Zero for 4 reasons:

1) The pool and especially the A6M2's production (123) are greater than those of the Ki-43 Oscar.
This last plane just begins to be produced from the beginning of the month (29 per month) and its production
is increasing of 3 per month per day.

2) Of course, our engineers did good job and managed to replace, in less than 10 days, one 7.7mm weapon by a 12.7mm weapon for all Ki-43 available. But, with its 2x20mm guns, the Zero is more deadly.

3) The Zero has the bonus, not the Oscar.

4) Singapour (6 hex) is at normal range for Zero (8-11) but at extended range for Oscar (5-7); the operationnal losses for the Zero will be lesser.

The december 20th, 4 Daitai are launched in the sky of Singapour and dogfight against a little bit less than one hundred ennemy fighters. This is a slaughter.

Despite a rather high altitude (14000 feet), the losses due to flak are not ridiculous.
The following raids will take place rather at 17000 or 16000 feet.
With so many engineers units at Singapour, the airfield is quickly repaired..
And because of bad weather (T), once on 3 days, my planes don't take off.
I don't manage to close the airfield.
At least, i stop the ennemy building fortifications.

Situation on january 1st 1942

Malaya-Burma's operations (continuation)

Except Georgetown and Singapore, Malaya has been completely conquered.
Taking off Khota Bharu, our bombers continue their constant strikes on Singapore.
However, bad weather and a japanese strike on Bankha (to neutralise the other dangerous
airfield in this area) allow enemy enginners to repair Singapore's airfield nearly as quickly as i destroy it.
Probably, the enemy manage to build some fortifications in the big city.
I hope it will not exceed the level 2.

Image

In some days, we will have finished our troops rally at Khota Bahru.
We will have at our disposal 5 divisions, 1 brigade, 1 inf reg, 4 tank reg, 4 eng reg,
and 2 marines bn for the final assault.
I want to catch Singapore quickly because i have nearly nothing (except logistical troops)
in Thailand.

The previous day, a sweep has been launched on Palembang where ennemy fighters were.
A good fight!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Palembang , at 20,55

P-40E Warhawk: 12 destroyed
[:D]

so a good ratio 1/4.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the north, in Thailand-Burma, our raids have been stopped. The Rangoon and Moulmein airfields are in ruins.
Apparently, they don't repair. The allied base forces have been retreated toward Mandalay where Emek seems
to want to resist.
He doesn't know that i have only enginners, logistical and AA troops in this sector.
Almost every infantry unit i have in this sector are in Malaya. I want to capture Singapore quickly.

The advanced Rahaeng's base has suffered 2 raids with about 40 B-17C coming from Calcutta.
None of our fighters could intercept them, they were flying to high. 3 Ki-43 have been destroyed on ground against 1 B-17C by op. losse.
(PS: They were nearly 200 planes at Rahaeng during the raid with an level 2 airfield)

Image
(in green from left to right: Andaman's island allied occupation; neutralized airfields; retreat towards Mandalay
in red: front line)

During this time, at Saigon, we proceed to a big ship concentration in wiew of Kuching invasion.
The Kuching's airfield will be very precious for us to dominate Java's sea.

Philippines

In the south, Davao has been captured. The retreated enemy forces has been blocked at Dadjangas to stop it to rally Cagayan.
I need it to train my pilots [:D]

In the north, at Luzon, Emek retreated his troops on Manilla, easy to defend because of the urban bonus.
I don't care. These troops are virtually lost by lack of supply.
I have made the blockade of his troops and i will wait their slow mortal agony.
The capture of Clark Field so quickly is unexpected. Wonderful for pilot training too.

Image
(in green: ennemy troops blocked
in yellow: concentric attack: the ennemy is cut by 2
in red: Cagayan's airfield destroyed one last time by fleet guns to avoid any bad surpris coming from my rear

South sea operation

Now, we are going to capture Rabaul. I have waited the return of the KB and
also enough freighters coming from Wake after the successful invasion of the atoll.
Some days after a surprise bombardment of Rabaul (4 planes destroyed), the operation is launched.

Image
(in orange: Nagumo and his CV

China

It is the theater of war i worry most about.

At the beginning of december, i had to evacuate Ichang, too much vulnerable to my point of wiew.
I wanted to strengthen my defence.

The ennemy has concentrated many troops at Sinyang.
This constriction must be hold. Otherwise, Chinese troops would be able to transfer from north to south and vice-versa.

Moreover, most supply needed by the city of Hankow is travelling by Sinyang.

A first chinese attack failed but more and more ennemy troops are arriving.

Now, i have taken 3 brigades from the reserve army group at Suchow to help Sinyang.

In the south, the pression is high on Nangchang. This town must be hold too especially for 2 reasons:
- this town is indirectely protecting Shanghai as it stops enemy supply coming from Changcha to reach enemy troops
between Nangchang and Shanghai.
- the lose of this town would be catastrophic in many months for the sea traffic between China and Philippines.

Nangchang itself is covered by a many troops at Kiukiang, otherwise, there would a risk of surroundings.

A chinese corps made a try; it has been brutaly rejected with heavy losses.

But we had ourselves suffered serious losses trying to reject chinese units in the south of Shanghai.
The 4th US Marines reg was there with some chinese corps;
so Emek carryied it from Manilla with SS [:(]

Image
(in yellow: Main objectives: - hold Nangchang and Kiukiang at all cost - hold Sinyiang and Hankow at all cost (central position in China and level 6 airfield) - launch an offensive to cut the supply road between Sinyiang and Honan

in dark purple: in secret, an army group is in reserve at Suchow to make a rear attack between Sinyang and Honan
in orange: some brigades are sent to Sinyang to help the defence
the border in red: front line to hold
in red: diversion attack

At last, after the fall of Honk-Hong, we have enough troops to make a diversion attack on Wuchow.
To be honest, this town doesn't interest me now but if it could attrack some chinese corps, it would be a good thing.
However, the 38th division which captured Honk-Hong will soonly be send to make the invasion of Java.

Now, what about naval transport?

So, the transport ship rally is nearly over at Takao and homogeneous transport TF have been made and are going in any direction.

My favorite is this one:

Image

Only 2 small ships (they are the only copy of this type) in a same TF. Wonderful to carry the small eng bn inside the great Japan empire. [;)]

Balance sheet of these 3 first weeks

About 510 allied aircrafts lost against 340 jap.
73 ennemy ships sunk against ... 0. [:'(]

Oops, sorry, one of our SS between Midway and Pearl Harbor is badly damaged.

Johore Bharu base, 1942 january 3rd

The base is used by our small dive bombers to attack allied barges which are doing comings and goings
between Singapore and Palembang.
4 fighter Daitai are making CAP but this morning, the F2/Tainan Daitai has an other mission (bad idea [:(]).

Suddenly, an humming more and more burdensome is in the air.
99 Dutch bombers coming from Palembang, with about 20 escort fighters are striking us.
Surprise!! Our fighters take off but are outnumbered.
For 1 Ki-43 and 1 Zero lost, 8 enemy fighters are shot down as 9 bombers.
But the remaining bombers go through the CAP and destroy many planes on ground.

Image

Balanced sheet: 35 planes destroyed on field.

However, it is not too serious.
First, the airfield is still operational with not too much damage.
And only 2 pilots have been killed.

PS: I told you Emek isn't a comic. [;)]

Canton airfields (China), 1942 january 5th

The revenge!!
2 days after the Dutch surprise raid on Johore Bahru, it is our turn to strike.

This morning, 88 bombers are taking off airfields of Canton to strike the airfields of Changcha in the north-west.
They are escorted by 2 Daitai of Nate (72 fighters, average exp 70) and an elit group of 12 Ki-44 Tojo
(average exp 82).
1 hour after, big surprise for our enemy. The airfields are full of fighters, some manage to take off.
During the dogfight, we lose 9 fighters (2 Tojo, 7 Nate, 8 pilots) but
most of our bombers manage to get through and to destroy planes on ground.

Image

Balanced sheet: 10 bombers lost whose 8 by Flak.
But, the enemy lost 39 fighters (among which 9 Tomahawk of the AVG) and 22 on ground (among
which 9 Tomahawk again).

A small sympatic success. [:)]

FORBIDDEN TO EMEK

Malaya-Bornéo area, 1942 january 6th

While some days before Rabaul base has been catched, the operation "K comme Kuching" was launched from Saigon.

The objective of this mission is to capture Kuching (which shouln't be hard itself) but with a minimum of losses in ships and once captured, to use its airfield (level 4) for 2E and for air suprematie on Java sea.

I want to do it without help of the KB.

I am familiar with Emek's sudden and massive raids, i am waiting for the worse (as usual).
At the opposite, the enemy fleet seems absent, the danger may come from the air.

At first, the CV TF is coming from Saigon: there are the CVE, CVL Taiyo, Ryujo and Zuiho with 73 Zeros on board in CAP 90% and only 9 Kate in naval attack at 100 feet (there are PT boats and barges especially in the region).

This fleet is with 2 naval combat TF and 1 ASW TF.
My idea is to lure enemy bombers on my CV but i must be at such a distance from enemy base that there won't be any escort fighters.

In the same time, a transport fleet is carrying the 35th brigade, followed by a second wave with engineers and
logistical troops (5th, 6th, 7th, 8th AF Const Bn, 9 Cst Gun Bn and 9th Base Force), all in more than 120 AP
and especially AK (mostly small and medium capacity).

Untill the january 8th, our fleets are completely undetected which is not good.
But, in the morning of the 8th, some enemy barges are detected at Kuching justly (probably for an evacuation).
They are right attacked by our Kate; 2 are sunk.
And now, we are detected, it was time!!!

How Emek will react? That is the question.

Situation the january 8th

Image
(in red: permanent raids on Palembang and Singapour but the Singapore's airfield is repairing faster
in purple: scout submarine: no enemy detection for 2 weeks
in red: a bombardment fleet will attack Sinkawang's airfield next night
in dark purple: CV must not cross this border
in green: 2 barges are sunk by Kate in the morning of the 9th)

Just in case he would mass many bombers at Batavia, i have ordered mine to stop strike Palembang and to make a raid on Batavia, with 70 Zeros in escort.

Last unknown, the weather is bad at this moment.

Malaya-Bornéo area, 1942 january 12nd

During night between the 11st and 12nd, the invasion fleet is arriving at Kuching and landing is beginning.
I decided previously to not bombard the base because i want to catch it safe and to quickly use the airfield.

One week ago, a raid with cruisers occured, i was thinking it was enough.
In fact, not exactly. Some coastal guns are still alive.
During the landing, 3 ships are seriously hitted but all the 35th brigade managed to land completely.

Image
(in turquoise blue: 3 ships seriously damaged but i think they have a good chance to reach Saigon before sinking

Afterwards, i think a small bombardment would have been a better idea. If my ships don't sink, it will be not serious.
