Japanese infantry RETREATING?!?

Are you guys out of yer mind?!? In what world are you living? In the SPWAW version 7.1 I saw Japanese infantry pulling back/retreating. How is this possible?
I know it is wise sometimes to pull back, but how can get the brave sake-powered men back? Retreating is for the Rumanians and Spanish, but certainly not for the Japs. Is there a file somewhere which determines the retreating stuff. Please, do something. I can't sleep, I have nightmares of an unrealistic WWII on my screen!

THIS IS URGENT!

Thank you.

They were advancing to previously prepared positions. Japanese soldiers do not retreat. But it is the duty of a Japanese soldier to obey ALL of the orders given him.

The game only has a limited number of pop up messages that it can use and retreating is one of these. What is really happening is that they are falling back to regroup and fight on. This seems realistic.

I can remember seeing films of Japanese troops re-positioning themselves so retreat is perhaps a euphemism.

7.1 corrected the issue, that allows them to retreat ( I mean regroup) to come back meaner than ever.

IJA Retreating?

Larry is right, they really don't retreat but "fall-back" to fight another day. Besides, I am sure you will find different units that are willing to die for the Emperoer (sp?). From a Marine point of view, its nice to have some "fall back" now and then because it is VERY difficult to dig them out of a cave.

Japanese retreat

I find it much better this way. I used to pull my hair out when my Japanese infantry would just sit next to USMC units and be tore to shreds. Its a lot better for them to pop a smoke and back up 1 hex and be ready to fight again on my turn. The most bitter infantry combat in SPWaW takes place between IJA/N infantry and the USMC. Neither one is very prone to retreat and neither one surrenders. If you like armor combat then the German-Soviet is best but for infantry lovers don't forget the Pacific.

I'm into MCWT right now and they are ornery cusses. It's tough going because as others said they just back up a hex and are ready again.

I need more arty! Mortars especially but I'd take anything at all. :(

I, for one, like the Japanese 'retreats' - it was really annoying in the past that you would blaze away at Japanese squads that would go from 20-19-15-10-5-0 without moving an inch...

Now, the bastards withdraw and come back again:)

Whatever the stereotype says, japanese troops sometimes retreated. Even an all out banzai charge could be routed.

Yup. It is not as if every IJA guy in the world had a deathwish. Hollywood and Comics be damned.

I think you're right

I tested this new system through the whole night, and I see now. It is a good thing that the Japs also pull back. Saves many good men needed in the future desperate battles. (Losing an elite engineer squad with some 60 kills is not very satisfying, especially then when it would be tactically more intelligent to regroup and attack with more punch.)
But I would also like to say that a "routed banzai charge" is not a banzai charge at all. Perhaps you should describe it as a "Spanish assault" or "Norwegian attack"? :))))

My Two cents, don't ever beleve that Japanese troops are retreating in any SP game! They don't retreat peroid! They are just trying to throw you a curve ball. No trooper battle is harder than US Marines and Japanese going at it for the same piece of ground.

I know my great-uncle didn't, for one.

Retreating Spaniards... who and when, please?

Sorry

Oops, I'm sorry if I offended anyone with my comments about the Spanish and the Rumanians. I was just referring to that fact the Japanese were the only true ally of Germany, along with the Finns perhaps. (A succesful ally)
If I would have commanded the German troops at Stalingrad front I would have donated the Axis satellite armies to the Red Army, perhaps Moscow would have fallen then... :)

No offense, it is just my opinion. I don't mean that the mentioned peoples would be poor fighters, perhaps the flaw really was just in the motivation...

Ok

Hi.

Rumanians were poorly equipped, poorly led and poorly motivated. And they performed well when those handicaps were alleviated with some German support in men and equipment, specially AT support.

The 250th Spanish Blue Division was the Only foreign division inside the Heer organization. And those poor bastards diehart anticommunists were the fiercest and toughest people in the Northern East Front. Do you remember Krasni Borr? the Volshok battles? Ask the Germans... or ask the Russians.

Italian 8th Army

The Italian 8th Army on the Eastern front was made of good units,
if somewhat badly equipped. It was destroyed in Dec 42 during operation 'Little Saturn' but it was very out numbered. The Germans thought it the best allied army on the front. In long WW2 campaigns I have ran a Italian core as well as the other minor axis allies. They do ok even without german equipment but you have to pay real close attention to them the first 5-6 battles to get their morale and exp up. The Italian units are nicely balanced. I like to use regular Infantry companies but I add a MG to each platoon as well as 1 recon team and 1 flame team.
The tanks are not worth buying but some of the assault guns or tank destroyers are nice. I also had 1 90mm AA gun that finished the war with over 200 kills!!!!!

Others...

Hi.

Hungarians performed well, too. And Finns? I have readed the trench warfare in the Leningrad front was caused by the finnish repulse to fight a FULL war against the Sovs. They lacked the Will to engage a total war.

Yeah, yeah...

Mostly true. I've also noticed the Italian potential. But how do we explain the catastrophe at Sicily? And in the southern Italy? And how realistic it is to have a number of 90mms in the Eastern Front as a form of AT? (There are air raided cities, ya know)
And about the Finns. Yes, we ceased our advance and refused to cut the Murmansk railway. Very wise from Mannerheim, any further attacks and we would have been overextended and the Soviets would have smashed and genocided us in about 1944-45... It was clear that the Germany had lost the war during the winter 1941-1942. If you don't agree with this you have poor mathematical skills.
And what is it up to my patriotism, I feel shamed because we fought on the Nazi side. From my point of view, the Soviets would have well deserved to beat the **** out of us and occupy Finland. But should it also be notified that we did better than anyone else on the Axis side when it comes to
holding on the independence and democracy. Was Spain ever confronted by some 900 Soviet tanks and other stuff in an overwhelming attack and succeeded in defense? I mean, the Finns have been tested at least. (It is stupid thing to lose a war by overextending troops, Mannerheim was the only Axis commander who fought with brains.)
