Hey Frog,
here you are another advice for free ;)
Try and use the "post reply" function, which is available for all the open threads, instead of starting a new one each time you have to post a reply

It's to early to tell but well try to figure it out. On one computer try running this free little program DirectX Buster it alllows you to undo your latest DirectX install and revert back to a previous one to see if the newer DirectX is the issue. Also there is a newer version of DirectX 8.1a available for installations from Microsoft. Also what OS are you running and, where did you get the SPWAW installation. Did you try reinstalltion SPWAW over itself, sometimes not everything takes the first time. Make sure your Vodoo drivers are the most recent and your SB live card, if you have an other sound cards lying around see if you can swap it out because there has been a bunch of gamers experiencing problems with SPWAW and SB live cards, usually they crash but haven't heard of video issues the same goes for the video card, if you can try another please do so. It's really weird to have 3 different computers do the same thing which means there has to be a common factor such as a corrupted copy of SPWAW if you used the same one on all systems etc. The more you can tell us the more we can help. I know you download from the Armor site, but he only has links to other sites for the SPWAW downloaded, the most reliable download source is the one from Edome. I send tons of gamers there and have yet to have problems. I've had problems with the ones from Games Domain and the Matrix one is no longer active, you did download the full game 400mb and not just a patch accidently correct. Here is a direct link to SPWAW 6.1 it has everything you need to get up to version 6.1, it contains 5.01 full version and patch to get you to version 5.2 and then patch to get you to 6.1 This has been downloaded a ton of times without any problems. If you can please give it a try. If you decided to do try it on 1 computer uninstall the old ver a SPWAW first before attempting to install this.

Your correct chief: SPWAW was designed to run at that setting but the only ones this seems really critical to are laptop users. I think I suggested to try this setting in an earlier post to him (he kept creating new threads instead of replying) but I don't actually know if he/she tried it. Yeah I did suggest that, here is the thread SPWAW video problem Man I wish I could type ever time I read my own posts I have to edit it so it makes sense. I can't spell for diddly!:o

Not a problem it's been hard to track this because he kept posting new threads instead of just replying, he might not of known it existed. Sometimes it not just spelling, you know when you sit down to write something and your mind automatically plugs in the right word as your writting and you go back and read it again only to find it missing those key words, that's what kills me. My mind knows what to say, but it never makes it to your fingers. Very frustrating.

I did try setting my desktop to 800..same prob no change.
It did do some interesting things to my desktop folders thou {messed them up}to big of fonts.
I down loaded that DX progm but the docs are in German.
Im useing a SB 16 card... not live.
I think i read a post saying the game doesnt like dx 8. maybe some one will let me know.
The fact all 3 sys have the same DX version {8 updated} might be the key.

Yeah, I remember, too, abt several people with problems DirectX related. Try and do a search (the function now is VERY fast :D ).
I did it and I found several threads on it; here you are a couple:

showthread.php?s=&threadid=11454&highlight=DIRECTX

If you have problems with the operating system, try reinstalling it over itself. That DirectX buster program may be on a German site, but when you download it, it's an executable that is in English when it walks you through the installation of it.

I too have a voodoo video card, and directx 8.0a, spwaw works fine here.

What video driver version are you using? Since my card is a voodoo 3 3000 agp I have used voodoo3 with dx7 support and currently I am using the voodoo 3agp driver from the opengl beta install. Both displayed the video fine, of course I am an amatuer digital video fan so I have just about every audio and video codec there is installed on my system.

If you have a voodoo 5 I don't know where to point you for a better more compatible video driver unless you want to try the opengl beta with its drivers.

The directx problem was only with win98 and dx8.1, and it applies to more games than just spwaw.

Have you tried downloading the smacker tools to see if you can play the .smk files with them? If smacker can play them then you have some other problem with your system.

Does DXDIAG.exe (found in your directx directory) find any problems with your files? Run thru it and see if it flags any drivers as out of date, or missing. Anytime someone has a directx problem that is the first program they should run to see what it thinks is the problem.
thanks, John.

I have a voodoo 3d fx 2000 on one puter.
Im having the same prob on 2 other mechines also, with built in video & a prophet 2 mx card.
This leads me to belive its a DX prob {all have 8.0 with video capture update.

Frog: I asked the same question a few weeks ago. Here is John's answer:
You get the smacker tools (the utils that make the .smk video files) from:

smaker

Good luck,

The smacker tools (used to manipulate the .smk video files) are from:
http://www.radgametools.com/

The opengl beta you can get (for the video boards supported) by going to www.opengl.org and following the link to glsetup. It will either update your system over the web (not recommended) or you can download the glsetup beta and have it detect and update your system.

It took me the better part of several months to get my computer running correctly, and then the next several years to get it to run better.

The drivers that came with my video board didn't work worth squat, I then downloaded new drivers and ran with those for nearly three years, recently I changed drivers when I got the opengl beta, and my system runs better than ever, Dx8 games all will work now, frame rates on my low end computer will clip along about 18 fps while playing C&C renegade online (vs the 4-6 fps with my older driver). I have about 25 video codecs installed along with about 30 audio codecs, in addition to the odd stand alone program like qualitymotion, quicktime or smacker.

I believe that no win32 operating system based machine runs 100% out of the box, the user must go out and fix all the things that Microsoft built in to screw up before the machine will run right.
thanks, John.
