Sorry to hear of your troubles my friend. I'm so paranoid that my wireless router sits in the box till I move to a rural location. And I had to special order a wired one. I'm so paranoid, that even my phones generally have wires.


The one thing you learn from a career in EW is that if it's in the air, and someone is willing to go through enough effort, nothing is secure.[X(]

Any security can be broken, if someone is willing to go through enough effort.  "Good enough" security is defined (by me [;)] ) as requiring enough effort to break that it's not worth it for little or no value.  I don't run a business or do anything of national security over my wireless router.  Sure, I pay some bills over it, but it's way easier to steal my credit card number when I hand it to a person in a restaurant who immediately takes it to another room.  [:D]  Simple 128bit WEP security is plenty "good enough" for me to sleep like a baby at night.  [8D]
 
With that said, sorry to hear about your misfortune, Herb.  I'm sure the wireless router has already had the simple to enable security turned on.  [:)]

For most people / users I would reccomend the following "good enough security" with wireless networks:

#1
Hidden SSID (i.e. wireless network name)

#2
Encryption (the more the better - some complicated pass phrase will do OK)

#3
Access to wireless network only for selected MAC addresses


Unfortunately (here in my town and country as well) most people don't do any of the #1, #2 and #3 above - they leave access 100% open.

Also, let us not forget, that even the above #1, #2 and #3 are not enough - the wireless networks can't be made 100% safe... everything can be broken into... sorry... [:(]

Mobile phones are designed to be buggable.

There are freely available programs for laptops that can be used to break WEP and WPA in real-time. Either use no encryption or WPA2. WPA2 is good enough for sensitive data.

An Australian one - we pay more than most countries and they either cap our downloads after a certain amount of downloads or charge soemthing like $0.20/mb for going over that limit.

It really sucks badly.

Is it because of your remote location or just because someone is holding a monopoly somewhere along the line and prevents competition from providing better access?

There has been an effective monopoly on most infrastructure and on the cables feeding us from overseas.

There is a new indepependent cable being commissioned soon (or maybe already) and there is a major government sponsored infratsructure upgrade coming which will eliminate the monopoly.

So, hopefully within a few years we will have comparable plans to the rest of the world.

You guys don't know what it is to be screwed for internet.  Where I live in Brazil the cable company hasn't decided to wire yet so I'm stuck with the phone company's ADSL.  The cable company is about $5/month cheaper and it's 3 MB download speed (fast for here).  The ADSL costs more and is a 2 MB speed.  There is no other choice at this time for broadband unless you want to pay $55/month for 1 MB speed for you laptop.  Yes, you're mobile if a particular area is covered, but the fee is per machine.  Then we can take into account that the taxes are the highest in the world here and that only adds to the cost of internet service.  The companies send their execs to do lunch every month to fix prices, or so it seems, as there is little difference between the meager choices that exist in almost everything.  [:@]

And that is the reason why I refuse to have a wireless network.

I have the impression the Australian government is owned. You may have a while to wait.

This may be a bit off topic but I'm curious about how much you guys get charged for i-net access at your countries.

Where I live a 16 mbit dsl-line + free nation wide phone calls costs € 35+ per month, depending on ISP. Could get 32mbit for same price but this would require a cable modem and I'm used to my wireless router.

I have 2MB Download speed, no data limit connection for €15,76 per month (taxes included). [8D]
Mobile operators and telecom ask somethink like €13,95 per month for same speed but 2GB limit or €21,95 for same speed and no limits.
As for mobile internet it is €23,66 per month, 2MB/s and 2GB data limit.
