On the 10th (bonus) DVD in Ken Burns' "Baseball", there's a great interview with Bob Costas. He delivered the eulogy at Mickey Mantle's funeral, and he talked about his boyhood idolization of Mickey. To the young boy, baseball heroes, off the field, disappeared into some sort of ether. The only thing that mattered was what they did in the ballpark.
I hold the same sort of feeling towards players. Tabloid headlines are meaningless to me. Can you imagine the blogs that would've been posted during Babe Ruth's career, or Ty Cobb's? They were legends, but they were also flawed human beings.

... My feelings exactly! ... What they do in personal life is not our business! We as fans are there to enjoy the talents, skills and the passions exhibited on the baseball diamond ... to show the miracles of one player to a whole team-work involves forever in our minds, hearts and the emotions of winners and not so winners ... but whatever they do to tarnished the game is no-no must pay the price ... Thanks KG, for another interesting twist of view of our greatest pastime and sport ...

On that same DVD, did you catch that part of the interview Costas (a St.Louis native) done just after McGwire hit #70, and Costas replying something to the effect it may never be broken. Oooops! Foul ball!!!!

I really have to see that documentary. Does it focus a lot on the early days of baseball?
