on of the atlanta's.  one of the early abtch as ahe has the 2 beam mounted 5/38's..

Did we have one earlier of the same location just a different angle?

Any particular reason[&:] True the gun layout wasn't the most effecient, and more AAA directors would have been usefull..., but "loathed" is a pretty strong term.

The class had its problems but by late 1942, every problem was corrected except the issue of being top heavy. Intermediate gun support was raised to effective levels. Firing arcs and direction was significantly improved.

Their surface combat record looks poor but the sample size is also so small that it is hard to draw any sort of conclusion from that. After the Solomon’s campaign surface the prospect of surface combat was so rare that the cruisers need not worry about it.
Their record in doing the job it was designed to do is superb. When tasked as a long range screening ship for fast carrier Tfs it excelled and shot down scores of Japanese planes and broke up countless other groups so that the close in ships could finish them off.

If that's eucalyptus in the background, it would have to be America. As I understand it, Eucalyptus does not grow as tall in Australia {less water}. My parents bought some Bushy Eucalyptus for their property line so they don't have to see their motel neighbors. Supposed to grow onlhy 20' high......They are well over 40' and are so thick they would qualify as a hedgerow.

I dont think they have much deck armor. Pair them with a CA or prewar BB. The heavier ships will attract the majority of enemy planes and not suffer such grievous injury from dive bomb or level bomber attacks. If they are in a carrier TF they will largely be ignored by attacking aircraft but will boost AAA.

You do not want CLAA's as the flagship of invasion or transport groups.

Agreed. That is the best place for them.

Actually the original design specs were for a Destroyer Leader/Flagship rather than an CLAA...., which accounts for what turned out to be it's poor armament layout. Had the consideration been AAA from the start, it's much more likely that there would have been two twin turrets forward, aft, and on each side..., with each pair having it's own AAA director. Less topweight and able to engage more targets simultaniously...

Somebody needs to ID the Destroyer and perhaps the cruiser on the extreme left (bow just visible) and the barge so Brady can tell us where this is.

Maybe a Benson class.
