1) if you conquer a protectorate's capitol do you capture their remaining provinces (ie. those not conquered by someone else) or just the capitol province? <<I think all>>
2) can you cede a protectorate's provinces away? <<I think yes>>
3) if yes to #2, can you see its capitol province away? If so, what happens to its army (assuming you retain control of other provinces)? <<have no idea>>

1) I was playing France last night. I invaded Denmark which was a British protectorate. Conquered Holstein which then showed as an occupied province of Denmark. Moved on to Zeeland and conquered it. When Zeeland fell, I got full control of Zeeland and Holstein; but Jutland and the provinces of Norway still showed as Denmark under British protectorate (and with no capital).

So I think you do not get control of unconquered provinces automatically, although it used to be that way.

2) You can and they become fully controlled provinces of the player you cede them to.

3) You can cede single province nations to other players, so you should be able to cede capitols of multi-province countries. This would leave them with no capital though like in my example with Denamrk above.

I was fighting Austria a few days ago and took Naples, an Autrian protectorate province. A few turns later Austria surrendered and Naples immediately became conquered. Calabria and Sicily became Austrian Territory that same turn, e.g., not part of a protectorate. I've never seent that before, but then again, perhaps that specific situation never arose before in one of my games. I do know that the protectorate rules have been tweaked over time. I don't really have any major concern with how they currently work. But, don't ask me to explain them.

It sounds like it is working according to the new design, with the slight oddity that provinces still held by the original protector still show the flag of the original protector in their control boxes.

(Technically those provinces should then be conquered, not protected--we try to use the generic terms "possess/possession" when speaking generally of minor provinces held by a nation.)

If I have time I'll try to test this to see if the original protector still has the option to liberate the protectorate--they shouldn't, but that was a bug we had way way back in a patch for CoG1.

It would be wise to ask Franck and IronWarrior about the occurances with Illyria in the last PBEM game we played. It was odd. And they immediately pointed it out.

(hint hint... please comment here IW and Franck) [:D]

Have issues in "Another PBEM" where two provinces of Sardinia including the capital are only shown as occupied because Spain has the third province of Sardinia conquered off shore.

You can cede protectorates right now and they become the outright possession of the power you cede them to, that doesnt seem right either.

That's true... it was Piedmont and Genoa. After sieging them they remained "occupied". I thought it was similiar to Terje's British-French-British-French problem that he posted in support. I tried a ceasefire, letting the provinces re-garrison, and then DoW them again but the same thing happened.

This appears to be fixed in the patch, but Mus brings up a good point about ceding them.

HiHi

Just a thought.

Mus, IW, our 'Another PBEM' game "may" not be a useful comparison, remember we patched over the orriginal v1. 00 game and decided to carry on as things seemed to be corrected, however we don't know for sure that any "Weirds" we see arn't still hangovers from pre-patch, so maybe our 'Another PBEM' game isn't a good basis to use as an example for whats supposed to happen Post patch.

All the Best

Thats true, I would still urge some serious attention be given to protectorates, protectorate relationships, etc.

I have a thread in support regarding the population of provinces of a protectorate I ceded that are still being counted as part of my population for luxury consumption purposes, food needs, etc.

Things still arent quite right even post patch. The "non pbem" rules are actually showing up in our PBEM games.

LOL Kingmaker and Mus :D

Kingmaker, Franck, IronWarrior, what about that situation with Illyria "flip flopping" PBEM1, did that problem get fixed in the patch? Here is the quote from Iron Warrior...

"lol yeah, what I think happened is that this is sort of a bug within a bug and ends up being correct (two negatives making a positive or whatever). What I mean is that Illyria was not garrisoned, which brings up a bug where the invading nation can't actually take the province. If it were garrisoned, Russia would have actually taken it. In the other pbem, I was unable to take nuetral minors Piedmont and Genoa because they were not garrisoned and they showed as "occupied". The only thing that seemed that might work is to offer a ceasefire and wait until the computer re-garrisoned it, and then DoW it again."

In Terje's support post "French-British-French-British" Eric commented and mentioned that he thinks something like that was fixed in the patch. What have player's experiences here been since then with the new patch?

Mus, what else do you think needs attention with the relationships with the protectorates?
