I'd wondered if Roger Kahn took the term from a newspaper or magazine in reference specifically to the Brooklyn Dodgers. Well, the opening lines of Dylan Thomas' 1934 poem, at the front of Kahn's 1972 book, is the answer. Kahn simply co-opted the term and applied it to the Dodgers. Arguably, Kahn's book sparked a wave of nostalgia towards that particular team that transcended the boundaries of the borough and spread across the nation.
Of course, I HAD to use the term as the title of my locker reports, as most baseball fans will know which team I'm referring to. It certainly sounds better than "Dem Bums", huh? [;)]
