I thought I remembered a thread where there was an issue with the requirements printed in the manual to build Rifle Infantry being incorrect, but I couldnt find it with a search. In my PBEM 109 game as England I just finished my level 7 barracks in Anglia (which is the only thing the manual mentions as a requirement) and Riflemen arent appearing on the build list.

Any ideas?

Says 7 in the manual. You can see in the screenshot I have that.

Anyone that knows for sure (WCS? Beta Tester?) please chime in.

So what are the "real" requirements for building a Rifle Infantry?

You also need the light infantry training upgrade to build light and rifle infantry.

Notice how you can't build light infantry either. Barracks 7 and the light infantry training upgrade allows you to build rifle infantry.

Regarding Light Infantry upgrade being an undocumented requirement.... could we get a confirmation from a WCS guy or a Beta Tester? I dont want to buy Light Infantry at 75 experience if it isnt an actual requirement.

Well, I don't think you do, but I could be wrong. I usually play France, and really like the 1803 scenario. They do not have the LI upgrade, but I eventually see the Rifle unit on the buy list. BUT, I may buy the LI upgrade somewhere along the line, so I just flat might be hallucinating. It's usually low on the list, since I have so many otehrs that I thinka re more important. I guess it's just one of those things I've just never paird attention to.

BJ could you get a developer to comment on this... its really aggravating to do long term planning in a PBEM based on the manual and then discover the manual is wrong.

I just want to get a straight answer as to whats required.

OK I found out whats going on I guess.

There are conflicting rules in the manual:

Rule 2.2.5 says rifle infantry require 8 barracks, rule 7.2.3 Barracks says 7 levels of barracks are needed to create rifle infantry.

I seem to remember Rifle Infantry listed for France, and I hadn't picked the Light Infantry upgrade. So I take it that it is a level 8 barracks then?

Well unfortunately I started a courts in anglia while I tried to get an answer, it wont be done for 5 turns, that plus another barracks and I guess we will find out for sure.

The pleasures of the bottomless pit that is the British treasury. I had to wait 6 turns on enough textiles just to go to level 6!! Level 8 ouch, maybe by the 20th century.

IW: The reason why Paris with 7 barracks can build riflemen at the start is because the light infantry training upgrade is one of 14 upgrades France starts with.

Now after getting London up to 8 barracks and picking a bunch of cavalry upgrades, I still can't build lancers.

Sometimes the best way to find the answer is to conducta series tests.  After you back them up, edit the data files to have 7 barracks in a province with no upgrade having been purchased, then see what happens in the game on the first turn.  Then change the barracks to eight,  Look again.  Then do the same with the upgrade having been bought at the beginning for the country at levels 7 and 8.  I do that type of thing all the time to figure out what's really going on in the game.  If you do that report back so we can all get the benefit of your newly acquired knowledge.
 
See the modder's guide for the files you need to change.  I think they're the COG2Start.txt and the COG2Players.txt files, but I could be wrong.
 
NEVER completely trust any manual for any game.  As development occurs, things change, writers make mistakes, program code does something else.

I have a pretty good idea as to how to test various things, I just dont have the time anymore.

I think Im just going to purchase Light Infantry upgrade ASAP in that PBEM game, see if that is it. If it isnt, I will get mad (because I didnt want Light Infantry upgrade in this game if I didnt need it), and then I will build a level 8 barracks. If neither thing fixes it, I will come back and post in this thread asking for clarification as to what the heck is going on.

Could you load up that saved game and take a screenshot please? Would be a big help.

The screenshot should show the level of Factories in London and the fact that Rifle Infantry can be built.

I would prefer not to have to get Light Infantry upgrade in this game (Im experimenting with different force compositions), but if you can show its needed I will abandon the concept and go with the plan listed above.
