I haven't played LV yet, but KV's WERE a more than a handfull for the Germans to handle in 1941. If you have engineer or pioneer units, they could help (not only through assaults, they can lay mines to!), otherwise only 88mm AT will give you frontal kills - but you know that already.

What the germans used was artillery used in a direct fire role(over the gunsights) That was the role the 88's found themselves in.
Hit 'Z' for the direct shots

Hitting Z will make your gun fire direct AT A HEX, and what you need to do is to hit the tank, so I'd recomend firing the normal way.

When you fire big calibre arty, sometimes you don't need direct hit. I had few events, when KV tanks were destroyed by 105mm guns firing directly, WITHOUT direct hit. I don't use Z (indirect fire) against tanks. I'm firing directly, hoping to have some luck ;)).
Some tactics against KV's.
50mm PAK is able to pierce KV's frontal armour from 10 hexes. Much more than 10 hexes when firing at side or rear armour.
When you have 88, it's piece of cake. You can destroy KV from every range and direction.
When there is no 88....., use every equipement available. Even PzKpw-II is useful. KV's have low rate of fire and low accuracy. Suppress them with PzKpw-II and III (with 37mm). Sometimes you will get KV immobilized. Then use OB arty, mortars, planes. If KV is still "alive", then move close with PzKpw-III with 50mm guns. They heve 1 or 2 APCR rounds. USE THEM WISELY, when you have predicted accuracy more than 80%. Best shot into rear armour, but with APCR you can destroy KV even from front.
BTW, once I destroyed KV-II from....... PzKpw-II. YES!!. It was in Dubno scenario. PzKpw-II was firing from one hex, and it pierced KV-II's front armor with APCR round. :)))))

I agree with all Paulus' suggestions and would add Infantry/Engineers and smoke.

In the Dubno defence, I advanced an inf platoon and an engineer squad up to the 250/turn hex, then smoked the road. I soon reinforced them with three StuGs and moved 37mm PAKs into position to cover the flanks against the lighter stuff.

Most KVs came straight down the road and got taken out by close assault :)

Kinda funny... one thing SP:WAW has taught me - if you don't have big enough a gun to kill tanks, use infantry. :D Infantry are prime tank killers, and can approach fairly undetected if the enemy tanks are deployed in a piecemal fashion. Otherwise smoke smoke smoke til you choke.
