Unit Upkeep

I find the information about the unit upkeep a bit vague. The manual states: Every unit’s Strength Point cost a specified amount of PPs of upkeep every turn. The default is 0.1 PP for each Strength Point, but this may vary for a specified country.
This idea is very good and I'm glad it was imposed. For gaming (and modding) purposes it would be nice, however, to know more precisly what the cost is based upon. Is it sheer strength of manpower? The upkeep seems to be 0.05 in it's un-biased form. Does this mean that the cost of a full-strength air army is 0.40 PP? Thus each air unit would cost the same in upkeep regardless of being tactical or strategic. How about land units? It seems to me that the upkeep will be higher as the units become more efficient with upgrades. Is this so?

Uxbridge,
you might get a good answer to this soon. If not take a country like Slovakia in the campaign game and give it some extra PP to play with and see how its upkeep varies as you buy different units and upgrade them in size and level. I say Slovakia just because it starts at war (so you can go get units damaged easily) and it has a pretty small military.

Possible solution, but I rather have it directly, otherwise I probably get something wrong. [:)]

Perhaps. I just know while sorta pondering the same thing the other day, I noticed how easy Slovakia was. I had f12's Slovakia as they kept sticking a cruddy 3-0 air corp on the belgian border and blocking a hex I needed to have as a jumping off point.
later in the game I noticed they had only 3 units a 4-0 air corp, and two 1-3 inf divisions. This was 6 Str points and the maintenance popup was saying Slovakia had 6 Str points for .15pp maint (I believe it was .15pp but I could be wrong). I was looking at that, as I wanted to make sure no Slovak divisions were sitting in garrison somewhere that i thought was German (and of course if I missed one the AI would later ungarrision somewhere important of couorse

). Anyway I remember using it to make sure I had the entire Slovak military, and then thought how easy it would be to use Slovakia to reverse engineer the upkeep system. Which as you say is a WONDERFUL addition to the game!

Yes, but now suppose that you want to now what happens when your Slovak units have been upgraded to level 4. How long will you have to play before you can accomplish that level? [:)]
The upgrade is splendid. Just have to know on what premises it is based.

well you can give the Slovak's as much PP as you wish. they are pretty backwater also. So set everyone else AI, put the delay on messages to short, build 3 labs and just end turn lots and hope the Russians don't invade eastern Europe till '44. You could I suppose do the same thing with say the Swiss, but you don't have the option of being at war, which I am not sure if that changes upkeep or not.
From 0 to 100 with 3 labs is about 10-11 months or so.. so you would be in mid - late '43 I think before the Slovak's had Level 4, but its very possible that you will know what the answer is when you look at the change from level 1 to 2 then to 3 anyway

An answer from one of the devs would be nice.. but if you don't get one this is a way to figure it out I think. Although you cannot do ships this way since Slovakia has no ports...

I'm presently onto the OOB's. Once ready with that, I will look into other things.

Yes, I figured that out. It's me not being clear enough. To make it easy, will a level 5 infantry division be more expensive in upkeep than a 1 level?
The first one has a combat strength of 1, whereas the latter a combat strength of 3. Does this mean that the upkeep cost is three times as high for the better unit?

Yes, this is right.
