Ok, with War in the Pacific:Admiral's Edition on the way, I need to learn strategy and tactics.
I fgured I would start a general thread about strategies and tactics for WitP:AE.
I also figure this could be a learning expierence for not just me, but for everyone.

Patience. People are still studying the game. It will be a while before this is relevant.

This is a totally different game in many aspects. The strategies are going to be different. We are not sure what they are yet.

V22, if you are just trying to learn the basics see this thread I started a few ago for some of what I did for preparation.

The AE specific strats, like others have said, will take time.

A couple things I noticed (keep in mind I only play as the Allies):
As has already mentioned before if you want to move anything to a base with a small port or a dot base you need AKA's or APA's and naval support units.
Japanese submarines in a test game I'm running are highly aggressive, so as the Allies you will need to set up an ASW system from the get-go, or at the very least don't move a small LCU/airgroup in only one ship.
Many ground and units in the PI and DEI can't be evacuated.

LOL...this is a read-only thread - no one know how to play the game, much less give advice on what to do. Most players who have got further than the Coral Sea scenario are still waiting for the first move to finish playing.

Well, not that I would call them strategies so far, but things I think any strategy will have to account for:
1. Leaky CAP. Means you are always vulnerable to air attack (even early Japanese carriers).
2. Escort transports. Surface combat seems much more deadly to me. Transports are much more valuable since it is much slower to load/unload.
3. Spread out and concentrate more. With stacking limits, we need to use more bases. On the other hand, things like HQ units give good bonuses to bases, so you want your best stuff in a good base, making them prime targets.

i started playing coral sea thinking i could use my land-based air like i did in WitP. there isn't any. and not enough support to move a pby unit w/ av to Ndeni.
and all my ships are not in port. so i have to start thinking differently as i can't coberTorres Strait with land-based air to the extent i could. the search arc is a nice touch and very important to keep in mind. the 0 arc is always at the top of the screen but i have to remember to change my arcs as various possible threats are indicated from intel, submarines, 70 japanese planes coming in from an unexpected direction.

V22 Osprey - This may seem like a dumb question, but you have Ae now? If so, congratulations, I saw where you wanted it badly.
I'm, this close (Maxwell Smart is making a index finger and thumb gesture) to starting the big campaign. I'm debating on whether to get that tracker thing before I do, though. I just finished a Coral Sea scenario and had my behind spanked. Both my carriers downed and all I got was one CVL and 1 bomb hit on Zuikaku.

You did better than me in the Coral Sea scenario, then. Both Yorktown and Lexington were surprised at dawn by the IJN CV's and sunk without being able to launch a strike of their own. The only positive thing I accomplished was engaging the troop convoy with my cruisers and turning it back from Port Moresby, but I still hated losing both carriers.

Well, I also got a few cruisers but I didn't think those were a big deal. I think I'm going to try that one again.
There is a strategy now for the Coral Sea scenario. I wished I had not read it, because I had already decided to play it again and my strat would have been the one I read. It seems pretty obvious what you need to do after playing it once.
