Disbanding air groups

Couple of questions about disbanding.

1. It says in the manual that when you disband a group it will transfer the planes and pilots to a group with the same aircraft, but groups can't be disbanded into another group if that would make the new group exceed its operational level. What is this operational level and where can I see it?

2. If no group is available the group's planes may be disbanded in the aircraft pool if within reach of the group's home base. Is this home base the main base on the map?

1. Air unit size is listed on the top left corner of the air unit info screen.

2. It's the strategic aircraft pool.
Sometimes the only option is to disband and permanently lose the ac and pilots.
If you do this to a fragment or detachment, the parent unit will increase in size to compensate for the loss.
Disband, do not return.

Manual states that the unit size listed on the top left corner is max ready aircraft. I don't have any problems for instance combining B-26 Marauder squadrons so that it exceeds this number. For example 22nd BG/19 BS squadron now has 22 ready and 5 maint'd aircrafts although the max ready aircraft number for the squadron is 16.

I'm still unclear about the whole home base issue. It would be nice to know where I must tranfer my squadron so that I don't lose the planes when disbanding.

my guess is that the home base is the base where the parent HQ of the unit is located.
i guess the whole thing becomes void if you have 20000+ supplies at the base where the squadron is located.

Experiment...

With unrestricted units (fragments, or Dets), fly them to an airfield that doesn't have the same plane type.
Disband do not reform, the parent will increase in size.
The planes and pilots go to the pool, and you can then put the planes in a unit of your choosing.

Restricted air units may not give you the option without destroying the unit.
Depends if it's isolated, or not.
