Well going to jump right in to AE against a friend who was my opponent in WITP. Going to stick to highlights for the moment and add pictures as I can.

December 7th attack at Pearl did not go as well as I had hoped and we will stay for another days attacks, have to sink as much as can while I am there and have the advantage.

Image

You will notice on the combat report a Sub vrs Sub Attack. This happened right at the start and was the first thing I saw[:D] Needless to say I-156 sank like a stone and she never even saw what hit her. Impressive.
Image
Image

Plan is to take KB south of Pearl and try to catch the allied carriers if they linger after my wake invasion force, which is going to wait for an extra day. As you can see my plan losses were minimal and I hope that is the case on the second day as well.

Image

The Malaya invasion is going smooth but I will have to see what happens after a couple of days. Have Borneo troops headed to Miri and Brunai

There is so much more to do in AE. From setting pilot training to learning what needs to be moved where and what to convert to move it[&:] it is a bear. I as sure to make a ton of mistakes but will learn as i go. Of course any comments are welcome as are hints.

I have not commented on china as it is still a little much to do more there than probe and see what is there.

Ken,

You know I'll try to learn everything I can from this AAR so I can use it against you when I play as Japan after the first patch. [:D]

you know that's just mean[:D] Turn 2 is over and I missed POW and repulse completely, never even sighted them. Also intel says I didnt sink anything in 2 days of attacks at pearl[X(]

Those large BB/BC are going to need a large port to reload in. Thus, they can get in one or two good rounds of surface action before they need to find a home. In my game vs AI (Japan) using 2 day turns, Big Bad Boise did her thing and single handedly wiped out the Miri invasion fleet. [:)] She was on her way to Balikpapan per the historical start, but I sent her over to "patrol." However, she is out of 6" shells. [:(] I hope the port, naval support, and support ships are enough to reload at Balikpapan. If not, down to Soerabaja for a supply of shells.

Use your Air HQ (the ones that allow you to reload torpedoes on Ms Nell/Betty) judiciously and cut him off. No longer do you need to have a size 4 AF. [;)] A size 2 or 3 AF with a port (size 2 or larger) should do him in.

thanks man, I will take a look at the air HQ and see where I can put them to best effect. Still would rather not have those 2 big beasts running loose, as I have already experienced vr's the AI that surface TF's can and will beat the crap out of you if they get in close.[:-]

Air HQs are now key; you start with extra HQs at Takao

One of the things I like to do as Japan is to get a thrust going toward Timor as soon as possible, to cut the DEI off from Australia. Palau doesn't start with alot of material, so in WITP you can use magic move to get units there fast and get started. This is not possible in AE. Do you have any plans down there regardless?

Thinking ahead, after Singapore/DEI/Rabaul, the basics fall, what is going to be your big push? Oz, India, NZ, what?

Well i have not thought that far ahead, as i am still trying to get my head around the ga,e in general. I think based on how shipping seems to be at a premium I may stick to Burma/India. Subs are very good at sinking transports and it is easier to supply that theater vr's OZ. What you think.

Just wanted to post the combat reprt for the 9th. Take a minute to glance at the surface combat between my Surface Combat TF and the PT TF. They tangled three times and my force came out short one DD for no allied loss. Thats rough considering I had a CL and 7 DD's vrs 3 PT boats. I sure hope this isn't standard or I will really be unable to cover my landings. Only good thing was the PT's didnt get to the landing force[&o] I am hoping this was due to the rain and low visibility, which does make it much more likely for this to happen. If thats the case then it went like it should have, which scared the crap out of me[:D]

Despite reservations i hit pearl one more time and the results were good, but my air losses were heavier. I am down about 40 planes with another 50 or so damaged.

I would double check KB to ensure you have enough torpedoes left and make adjustments accordingly. You want some if you come acroos either or both the American CVs.

PT Boats - I wonder if setting Zeros to 100' naval attacks works in AE. You might try it with a small number on Formosa.

Miller, FYI the AK to AK-t conversion does not work at the moment; on list apparently for first patch. I'm no expert yet, but I think converting this is critical early on, as you really need the troops space initially (probably convert some back after initial push).

Hopefully it won't require a re-start to patch that, because I would want to restart without that feature

That kind of stuff is why I am waiting for PBEM; well, patches and getting my brain around it.

12-10-1941 update

Pearl Harbor was attacked one more day (wanted to sink something bigger than a DM[:D]) Managed to sink one BB but the aircraft losses were heavier though not severe. Time to leave for sure so they will head to wake to help with the invasion there, which was delayed. They will meet up with the tankers near wake.

Philippines invasion is going well, air battles have been tough and losses about even.
Image

The PT Task force came back and we beat them off again, but this will be a runnign sore as i don't think Patrol Craft can handle them alone:

Air losses so far:

Ship losses:

Had a mid ocean intercept and it was bloody for the allies:

Right now I am very unsure what to do about the economy. I am bringing in Resources but Miri was 50% damaged so i am sending in supplies to repair the oil fields, it will serve me long term and is in a good location. I sure hope all the oil fields don't take that kind of damage of this is going to be rough. I converted alot of AK's to carry troops and also converted small ak's to PB, need alot of ASW in this game i think.

China I am probing and figuring out where I can advance after Hong Kong falls.

While it seems that it is relatively easy to take Miri since there is only a RN BF there, we all may need to go back to the tried and true method of bring a BB TF with BB and/or CA to disable the engineers there. OR, you land at Brunei and use the AF there to bomb Miri for a few weeks to kill off the engineers. I was fortunate against you and only had Palembang damaged to any degree.

I see more sheets of paper with notes and planning being done before our game starts after the first patch. [:)]

I'm not convinced disabling engineers makes a difference. It's SUPPOSED to make a difference, but in WITP, I swear that Balikpapan was hard-coded to get trashed no matter what you did.

I am playing AI and trying not to think too hard, so I just landed on Miri anyway because a unit was prepped for it. Same result: Exaclty half the base was damaged, half not. It fell very easily, that's for sure.

Not alot of major things going on right now. I have invasion TF's heading towards numerous islands and as to the bombardment idea to kill the engineers I just don't think the IJN has the ships to do that for to many TF's I am coming to the opinion that i need some actual combat ships with TF's of any size or PT boats or allied surface TF's will do me serious harm. (this is based on my AI game, but I am sure wirraway will do me wrong soon[:D])

All in all a good turn. I really like the changes to subs and aircraft. Just feels much more historic for both sides. I know for sure my advances will be slower and if you don't prep and plan it is going to be difficult to move the allies out.

Well we had the first Battleship clash of the war at Kuching. POW and Repulse against Kongo and Haruna.
Image

Numerous hits were exchanged over 2 different contacts. I lost a DD and had another beat up (but she will make it 33 sys 16 eng) and I do not know how bad he came away. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Glad I covered that landing force. Have Betties based out of Kotu Baru so hopefully will get him if he is damaged. Here is my damage.

Day Time Surface Combat, near Vigan at 80,73, Range 15,000 Yards   This combat kind of bothers me only because the PT boats were spotted from 15000 yards[X(] and they closed all the way to firing distance without getting hit at all, which I have a hard time with, if 15 small escorts can't hit them with all that fire it is going to be tough[;)] Of course I will not pass judgement until I play farther on.

I have noticed something strange. I have done conversions of some of my AK's so I can carry more troops. They show up on the ships screen as having more troops space but when I go to form a TF it is reverting back to the original load out? Cannot figure out if i am doing something wrong or not. Anyone know anything about this?

Already known bug. Converting AKs to AK-ts doesn't work.

Well we are still playing but have agreed to restart after patch one due to the AK bug, which to me is a major problem as Japan really needs the extra troops capacity early on. Also i am praying the Tracker is done by then as staff is ok but doesn't give me the information I feel I need as far as tracking of resources and oil/supply.

Will post some screens of next turn along with the losses and some of my plans. Have learned alot so far especially about prior planning and getting shipping where you need it. It is plain at least to me that Japan doesn't have enough anti-sub assets to protect everything unless you wait and use large convoys. For small invasions and local ops there are going to be losses to allied subs but so far I have not suffered to badly and have caused some damage to attacking subs.
