Takeover of TF for suicide run

Guadalcanal scenario -
The computer apparently took over an empty transport TF headed to Noumea, gave it a pickup order for an air squadron at Milne Bay and sent it directly at a Jap BB TF in the way (didn't quite reach the Jap TF). Orders from me were retirement allowed, return to Noumea.
So I went back to the previous turn and noticed the pickup order on the right side. I formed a new TF from the same ships which eliminated the pickup order. Next turn off it goes again with a same old pickup order.
Now I formed a new task force, gave it an escort mission, and told it return to Noumea - only instruction. New turn, same result.
Finally, put the two DD's in a surface force, one transport in an amphibious TF, the other in an escort TF, and all meekly headed home but with each portion in a separate hex of course.
I have a saved game.
