Is it basically pick a unit to fire, then click on target hex?

Artillery fires from far back as well? Is it factored in in terms of supporting and infantry attack or do I have to fire the artillery unit myself?

oops found the answer to one question

Rules Addendum:
1. In addition to directly attacking enemy units, Cavalry and Artillery are able to support other attacking and defending friendly units in combat. Cavalry must be adjacent to the Defender’s hex in a combat to lend support. Artillery must be within two hexes of the Defender’s hex in a combat to lend support. A combat can only be supported by one Artillery and one Cavalry unit. These units support combat with the following bonuses at their base level:
a. Horse Artillery: 8%
b. Foot Artillery: 13%
c. Siege Artillery: 4%
d. Light Cavalry: 16%
e. Heavy Cavalry: 17%

Now what about the actual mechanics? Select a unit, then click on a unit to attack or how does it work with the interface?

It's like Panzer General. Click on a unit that you want to use for attack, move it next to the unit that you want to attack & then click on the unit to be attacked.

Infantry and Calvery have to be ajacent to the hex they are attacking (directly), Artillary can fire from up to 3 Hexes away to do direct damage, Calvery Artillary can move and fire, Foot Artillary can only either attack or move. Only one unit per hex, no stacking; you select the unit and then the unit your attacking if ajacent or with in 3 hexes if an Artillary unit, or move to a hex the unit can move to, then you can select the unit you want to attack as long as it is in range. You can not attack and then move, you must move first then attack or just attack without moving unit.

Artillary and Calvery can directly attack a hex/unit and do direct damage. During the same turn the Artillary or Calvery can also add to a friendly Infantry units defence if attacked, and add to it's attack if the target hex is 2 hexes away for Artillary or ajacent to for Calvery. This is done automaticly and you can see bonus in the combat odds window when playing.

Only one Artillary unit and one Calvery unit can aid an Infantry unit, for both attack and defence, the computer decides which unit to use if there is more then one in range, usally the one with the highest attack value so unit strength plays a part.
