I just moved the game over to my portable laptop (using XP) and tried to run it. I got the message "Error: Can't set screen mode" and it won't move any further.
My system:
Direct X: 9.0c
RAM: 1 Gig
Video Card: Mobile Intel (R) 945 Express Chipset Family
Video Memory: 128 MB
Resolution: 1024 x 600 (32 Bit) (60 Hz)
I've tried varios things, all with the same error.
Ideas?

You will need to get to 1024x768. that is the only resolution that WitP will run in.

If this is one of the Netbooks (like Asus EEE 1000H) it probably handles larger resolutions but only shows 1024x600. The screen scrolls though. Works fine on my Asus.
Check this thread for the same error:
Install Error - 'Can't Set Screen Mode'

I had the same problem. Try this:
<<Okay..got it working. For future reference, here's how to adjust the screen resolution on an Acer Aspire One netbook (8.9" screen) to get it to run AE:
1. Right click on desktop area to bring up "Display Properties"
2. Choose "Settings"
3. Choose "Advanced"
4. Choose "Monitor"
5. un-check the check box that states "Hide modes that this monitor can't display"
6. Go back to "Display Properties" and change resolution from 1024x600 to 1024x 768" pixels.
AE should run now, though you'll need to scroll 'off the page.'>>>
