Pre-war thoughts

I just had an interesting idea. I changed the scenario and restored all countries to peace. Now Germany will have a choice - attack Poland or not. If he choses not to do it, neither France nor UK can declare war on Germany. They have to wait until Germany attack another country, and France, reluctant even to go to war against Germany on the behalf of Poland, will be even more restricted. This way Germany can avoid Hitler's gravest mistake and try other approaches, or, at least, use another week at peace and better the original set-up.

Another idea is to go back maybe 6 months in time and increase the diplomatic point allocation to have a small "political war" before the start of the fighting.

I'm just playing around, of course, but the thought of an alternate start is tempting. [;)]

A scenario like this will only work if all 6 major countries have human players, though.

I once set up a 1938 scenario for RtV with Czechoslovakia restored to health. I had to work around some problems, and adjust events and so on, but I think it would be a very fun variant for ToW. Someone mentioned a WWI variant too, and I would enjoy this too. The more the merrier, and earlier rather than later, game time wise I mean, as I am not so interested in a USA-USSR conflict.

Personally I think it's an excelent idea for mod. It should be pretty easy now to mod new countries with the editor now.

IIRC Czechoslovakia is already in the game files included, so the only thing you might need is a flag.

Going back in time 3 years could be interesting, having to play the Spanish Civil War for example. With Major Powers who could send troops or points to help the Nationalists or Republicans, and gain political points with a faction or another. A little like in Days of Decision. Just a crazy idea I have.

micheljq, you are absolutley right. It's gonna be a lot of work if somebody decided to try, but I think it might be fun.

Does anyone remember the very old Avalon Hill game "Origins of World Wr Two"? It would be fun to play that and then use the results to shape the start of ToW. It was all diplomacy. As I said it was a long time ago, but I remember it was fun.

By the way, the "Origins" war gaming convention is "named after" this game.

HoI does sort of the same thing.
Personally, I've suggested an alternative starting scenario where the Kriegsmarine isnt left hanging out to dry like yesterdays laundry with a couple of non-mobilized warships and 3 submarines in the Atlantic.  (I wonder where I put that post.  Maybe its on the developer's board.[8|])

I remember it well. A bunch of us "Diplomacy" freaks played it occasionaly at UT in the Earlies.
I've been trying to get someone (anyone?) to admit that he remembers SPI's "Fast Carriers" as an example of how to approach carrier operations in the Pacific.

If there are going to be any questions 'how to', I'll do my best to answer

Yes, I have a "how to". I created Czechoslovakia and everything went fine until it dawned upon me that I didn't know how to make the Czech symbol on the diplomacy screen. Without it the German player can't declare war on the Czechs. Is it even possible to mod this at my end?

Be sure that in countries.csv in your scenario Czechoslovakia is active.
To set up a capital, you must enter Capital coordinates on diplomacy bmp image (X|Y), those are in AP and AQ column in countries.csv file.

Yes, you're right! There it was. I did that, but I thought the coordinates was for the capital hex and the symbol ended up in the Artic Sea, where I never saw it.

Now it works. Thanks.

If there are going to be any questions 'how to', I'll do my best to answer

1) Would it be possible, if one were to set the start as no one at war with no one, to have the entry of France and Britain triggered by the invasion of any country by Germany?

2) If so, how?

AFAIK such scenario setup with proper event triggered by the invasion of any country by Germany is possible.

2) If so, how?

Doomtrader is out for one more day - he is the best person to describe “how”.

2) If so, how?

1) Of course it is possible

2) First, please spend a little time reading this tutorials:
http://forum.wastelands-interactive.com ... php?t=1865
(at least parts 1, 2, 3 and 8)
Create new scenario and open relations.csv file
Change all 1 to 0, which will means there is no war between those countries (remember that it's two ways war, so for example it means that USA is at war with USSR and USSR is at war with USA).
Another step is to create events for England and France that will fire when Germany is at war,
