Magicly appearing units

On March 1st. 1942 VMF 222 and VMSB 242 both magicly appear at Midway without any transport. VMSB-242 has two air craft (vindicators) but I am allowed to updgrade to 18 Dauntlesses. My understanding is I should not be able to upgrade at Midway, Supply, Headquarters etc.

This has happened on two different games.

I guess this just doesn't make sense to me. As a game that is pushing realism over the cost of playability units that just appear at an isolated base ( and are completly upgradable) is not consistant. I can see HQ units being created or units being split up and renamed since that is just a paper work shuffle. [X(]

I believe these two squadrons were historically created at Midway by dividing squadrons that were already there.

As to realism vs playability, I have never found any two people that agree on where that line should be drawn. Two sober people, that is.

Ok, making two squadrons out of one makes sense and midway is within the range for the replacement rules ( I had to go back to look). The statement in the operation log that the unit had "arrived" threw me off.

I sort of miss the old board games like "Submarine" that you could sit around with your friends and drink beer. At least until you had so much beer you lost track of the hidden torpedoes.

you are right on both counts but I wonder about calling Midway an "Isolated"base"?

According to Wiki, VMF-222 was in fact formed @ Midway from members of VMF-221. But, also according to Wiki, VMSB-242 was formed @ MCAS El Centro, CA as VMTB-242 on 430915 and didn't deploy to the Pacific until sometime in 1943, so I'm not to sure about that unit.

FYI, you shouldn't then be to suprised when you have several more UMSC aviation units form in Hawaii & don't be to shocked where you see VMO-155 arrives, and with what type of aircraft, these are historically correct. Same goes for some USAAF units as well.

Thank everyone for the responses. This is probably difficult to do but changing the message to formed at X location instead of arriving at X location might reduce the confusion for those of us who don't have the same information on the OOB, at least for Islands. Even I can understand that units showing up at the West Coast, Austrailia and New Zealand were manufactured drafted whatever. Or maybe just a note in the manual under replacements.

@ Madgamer. I call Midway an isolated base because it is not on the main shipping path.

@ Iron Duke. I have always been amazed that the Finn's really liked the Buffalo and the Russians liked the P-39. [8D]
