1.82 v Great Players Being Released

I keep having a problem with all of the great players in my league being released by the computer.

One example: Nicholas Cumming hit .342, 208 hits, 43 HR, 126 RBI was an All-Star & Silver Slugger. He was released by his team, even though he had 92 Contact, 97 power, 61 Eye, 54 Potential and is only 33.

Is there no way for a simmed league to have each team create an "affinity" for a player. Meaning the more the player helps a team win, the less likely the team would cut them. And if the team did decide when the player was 40 to cut him, couldn't there be something to get the player to retire.

Think Joe Dimaggio, Ted Williams, etc.

Just a thought... Thanks

"Player affinity" IS an option choice for real player leagues. As for retirements, you CAN access a player's card and retire him through "edit bio".

One thing to check is if the team he was on was in dire financial straits. In some cases a team will go into a "dump salary" more.

Regardless, I will have a look, as I did significant work on this aspect of the AI a few months back.

He was not in dire straits, and he wasn't the only one. Through my almanac, I've had a lot of career record setters who are "free agents" <-- Meaning they weren't near retirement and they were just cut by their team.

Even though I have salary turned off - reserved clause only.

Has the idea of options for each player come up (regardless of reserved clause or salary) to where a team must keep them on the roster or cut them entirely because they've run out options to go to the minor leagues.

Okay Greek,

Some really good feedback here, so I have made some significant tweaks to that part of the AI for the next release. Thanks again for bringing this to my attention.

From the forthcoming 1.84 release notes:

AI Tweak - Teams are much less likely to release players that had a good season in the previous year.

AI Tweak - Player/Team Affinity - As a player spends more years on a single team, we reduce the likliehood that the team will release him. This can be adjusted in the XML file (see the RELEASE_AFFINITY_ADJUST elements).

Note, there is also an age threshold here as well, so they won't keep guys in perpetuity just because they are team vets.
