After installing the patch this game causes my computer to totally freeze and I have to reboot.

Two situations:

#1:

Had scenario going and then hit the 'x' to exit the game immediately. Game stopped responding and when I entered the windows task manager I saw MULTIPLE WITP-AE applications going even though I only had one window open. I could never stop the game.

#2:

Had scenario #1 going and during the calculating air superiority phase it locked up again. Same result as above.

I have Windows XP Service Pack 2, with according to the General Systems Properties:

Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.53GHz, 2.52 GHz 1.00 GB of ram

Haven't seen this on any of our XP systems.

What command-line switches are you using, if any? Do you have any other programs running in the background?

I didn't have anything running on my computer that I didn't have running with the original War in the Pacific game. I could always hit the 'X' in the upper right corner of the window and exit immediately.

With AE it seems to cause my computer to completely lock up.

Was this the case before the latest update as well? Does this also happen when running Full Screen? Post a DxDiag for us please.

1. I actually only had the first day of the Dec 8th scenario going so I could look around on the map. Never tried running a turn until the patch.

2. No idea about Full Screen - I always have it windowed.

3. Not sure how to get a DxDiag so I'd need instructions.

After having one turn from scenario #1 complete I think it just took a long time to calculate the Air Superiority. But the problem with trying to exit the game by pressing the 'X' on the window may be the real problem.

I always exit the game using the normal game exit buttons, not by closing Window's window.
Doing it as designed ensures everything is shutdown cleanly.

I wanted to end right then during the middle of a turn to stop what was going on. It worked just fine with the original WITP and should with the new one too.

I didn't want to wait 10-15 minutes for something to finish that I wasn't interested in in the first place. Even though I had it running windowed I can't do much of anything else while a turn resolves so my computer is effectively dedicated to the turn resolution.

If you need to stop it right away, it's best to Ctrl-Alt-Delete and kill the WITP AE process. That will work every time.

Your video and audio drivers are from 2002, I would highly recommend updating those as a start. Also, try the different commmand line switches to see if any of those help it close more cleanly on your system.

alt + F4 should work to kill it too.
