Are there guidelines used in adding Naval Support to some of the bases and not for others? I would like to add some to places like Astoria and Oak Harbor that have repair yards but no Naval Support. However, I would like to follow a historical basis or guideline if there are any. How about garrisons?
Just rule-of-thumb guidelines. Places where there were real live, honest to gosh, Navy bases, Naval shipyards, places tied into Naval Districts. Basically NSY kind of places.
As to how we placed BFs with NavSup: Diego and LA because they were Navy Bases and tied into 11th Naval District; Mare and SFO because they were Navy Bases, had big Naval shipyards, and tied into 12th Naval District; Seattle (Bremerton) was Navy Base, Naval Shipyard, and 13th Naval District.
Because the Allies don’t use Naval or Merchant, Shipyards, certain places with significant construction capacity were selected to have an amount of Repair Shipyard capacity. However, these were places that were not associated with Naval Bases, per se, and would not be expected to have a significant Naval Support infrastructure.
Places with Repair Yards, but no BFs with NavSup, include:
Tacoma – big construction yard, but no Navy base, etc, so no BF with NavSup
Portland – big construction yard, but no Navy base, etc,
Stockton – small construction yard, but no Navy base, etc,
Astoria – small construction yard, but no Navy base, etc,
Oak Harbor – small construction yard, but no Navy base, etc.
Not to say we got it right, just that this is how it was done.
