Aircraft carriers of from Germany/Italy

Post by micheljq »

Hello,

I am just listing some Carriers from european Axis powers who might have been in service if their leaders would have decided so, some of them were near completion :

I did look at wiki

Germany :

1. Graf Zeppelin : It was launched in 1938, the carrier itself was near completion but never went operationnal, it was to have 50 aircraft, quite a big carrier.

2. Flugzeugtrager B : The hull itself was completed in 1939 but never launched, like the Graf Zeppelin, it was to have 50 aircraft on it.

3. Seydlitz : constructed as a heavy cruiser, construction was having all sort of delays. In 1942 it was decided to convert it to an aircraft carrier. Never completed.

I will add Italy who did begin production of some too but never went operationnal.

However, it would be nice to have the option of building them if a player want to play an Axis who would decide to put more emphasis on naval power, for what it's worth. For example an Axis wanting to try a Sealion or an Axis just wanting to put more pressure on the Commonwealth's convoys, with a strategy using U-boots, naval-air aircraft, surface ships and aircraft carriers. And possibly not doing a Barbarossa against USSR, or doing a late Barbarossa in 1942, or choosing to play more defensively in the East.

The launch of the German aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin :

Now some Italian would have been carriers :

From wiki :

1. Sparviero (Italian language: "Sparrowhawk") was an Italian aircraft carrier designed and built during World War II. She was originally the ocean liner MS Augustus. The conversion was started in 1942 and was almost completed, but the ship was never delivered to the Regia Marina. She began to be scrapped in 1946, a process completed by 1952.

2. Aquila (Italian language: "Eagle") was an Italian aircraft carrier converted from the trans-Atlantic passenger liner Roma during World War II. Work on Aquila began in late 1941 at the Ansaldo shipyard in Genoa and continued for the next two years. With the signing of the Italian armistice on 8 September 1943, however, all work was halted and the vessel remained unfinished. Aquila was eventually scrapped in 1952.

Michel, you can build as many CV's as you like (and want to pay for.) I believe that there is even a completion event choice for Graf Zeppelin (although I may need correction from Doom.)
I built one once. It was promptly cut out of the entire Kriegsmarine and sunk by two allied cruisers, without another ship in sight.[8|]

They come with events but pretty late IIRC (somewhere around possible historical date)

I currently have total control of the Atlantic and north sea with a german fleet containing three carriers, two bought and paid for, the other cheap through an event although i haven't tried buying an Italian one.

This is quite strange. I do not think it would be possible against a competent human player to take control of those sea zones over the Royal Navy. It may be possible temporarly, but over a long period of time? Mmm not sure.
