Hi everybody

Micke II and I, we begin a test game on GC scenario 2.
Micke II with the japs and i with the Allies.

Test game means that even if we will play seriously, we are still in learning phase so we will probably make a lot of mistake and as myself a modder of WitP, i want to have a good overwiew of AE to see what is good and what is less good.

So, don't expect a beautiful AAR (i have already an other AAR of WitP on this forum) but mainly combat reports and comments.

and the house rules


1) Allied units in China (groud and air) must be under "China command" ou some other subordinated HQ.
These units can't leave China.
Air units under other HQ can transit by China but must be "stand down".

2) Same for the japs with "China Expeditionary".
(only exception for jap unit under other command and in China at the beginning of the scenario)

3) No micro invasion by SS.

4) No more than one air unit flying a mine laying air mission per turn.

5) At least for this first game, no strategic bombardement of China. This may be changed during the game.

6) Strategic bombardment of DEI allowed but if i see that it is as efficient as it is with WitP, i'll stop.

7) As with WitP, 4E never below 10000.

8) No west allied or chinese unit in URSS and vice versa.

9) Float plane on board jap SS must be Glen.

10) We will test night air mission and maintain them if they are as unefficient as there are in WitP.

11) Realistic factories.
I don't know yet if my opponent choose realistic or unrealistic R§D [&:] but i don't mind.

Well, a little bit disappointed by the fact that the scenario forced to make the same mistake Sir Tom Phillips did but on the other side, no one was making such a historical mistake with WitP, so that's ok.

This first turn gives me a good impression of the game.
Dogfights are far less lethal than in WitP.

I begin my first turn and fist shock: nearly not plane replacement.
Here are the screen:

for USSAF, only 60 fighters a month and not so much later.


for USN, nearly the same. 21 SBD, great.
But, quite a few for Kingfisher, i will make big Kigfisher raids.[:D]

The F4F-4 prod is starting only in march.

Now, we enter in the Lewis Caroll world of US pilots:



My question is: how many USN pilots were lost during all war in Pacific?
I would be surprised it would be more than 2000 or 3000.

So, with about 7000 pilots at start and 600 in addition per month, i would have conquered the entire solar system ... if i had planes.[:(]

An other strange thing with Canadians:

the Stranraer don't have any prod, only 21 in pool.
No upgrade before december 42, it will be in Canso.

There is a very small Catalina factory at Vancouver (3).
But they won't be used by actual Stranraer units, there is no upgrade for this.
Only one unit with Catalina I appears in the reinforcement screen for Canadians: No.413 Sqn RAF [&:](at Aden).

I checked in the editor, it is really a canadian units so it should be able to receive Catalina replacements from Vancouver factory.

Conclusion: take care of our Stranraer!!

Small correction: the Catalina's factory at Vancouver is not a canadian factory but a british one.
So, i am not sure that the Catalinas produced will be able to replace the No.413 Sqn RAF unit which is a canadian unit.

Assuming pilots are large proportion of USAAF and perhaps a small porportion of Navy and Marine casualities. It still seems to me the pilot pools for the Americans are somewhat oversized?

I think you are right:
Asia-Pacific 108,504; Army ground forces 41,592; United States Army Air Forces 15,694; Navy/Coast Guard 31,485; Marine Corps 19,733.

If you supposed that 1% of casualties from Navy/Coast Guard and Marine Corps were pilots, it gives:

Navy pilots KIA: 3000
Marine Corps pilots KIA: 2000
USAAF pilots KIA: 15694
if 1% is a good valuation.

So, USN pilots replacement and start pool is largely overestimated;
USMC pilots replacement and start pool is still overestimated;
USAAF pilots replacement and start pool seems good.

To my oppinion, it would be more realistic to have very few pilots in pool at the beginning and appropriate replacement pool.


A last word on Catalina's production at Vancouver, i confirm they are british so they won't be able to fill the No.413 Sqn RAF.
Something to be fixed here.

I just discovered that when i make a air unit transfert, the damaged planes are automatically sent in the reinforcement box toward the base targeted and with a delay (i supposed to be proportional to the distance travelled). Nice!!

It would be a good thing too if, in the case of long distance transfert, some king of air missions (raids)
wouln't be able to be performed by the air unit in the same turn.
I don't know if it is the case with AE.

Here are the respective productions for the 3 areas USA/Canada, Australia/New Zeland (i forgott very small pacific prod) and India (without Burma):


USA/Canada production centers:

Res = 4780
Oil = 2610
LI = 3500
Ref = 2610
HI = 1520

There is an excess of Res for LI and HI.
So, after calculus, there is an excess of 9000 supply and 20000 fuel per day.


Australia/New Zeland:

Res = 3060
Oil = 5
LI = 2400
Raf = 55
HI = 1200

Again, Res is in escess.
So a total of 4800 supply at the cost of 2400 fuel or
2400 supply only in excess if there is no fuel.


India:

But, for South Pac, the fuel must come from USA, it is an other story.


PS: in all calculus i did, i didn't take into account of spoilage due to road transfert.

Second turn:


Due to the rather poor results of the initial raid on Pearl Harbor with only one battleship sunked I decided to send a second raid.
Inspection of the torpedoes stock of the KB CV shows that 2 CV have not used their torpedoes during the initial raid.
So it's also the reason why I sent a second raid. Air losses were of course heavier during this second raid with a US CAP rather efficient plunging from 33 000 feet on the Zeros escorting the bombers at 15 000 feet.
The results of this second raid were better with 4 more battleships sunked but to my surprise the 2 same CV which has not launched torpedoes during the first raid have not used them during the second raid !
Does somebody knows the reason ? Is there an explanation or a bug ?

Micke II launched a second raid on PH; he was thinking that the first one was not enough; i don't agree;
the first raid managed to sink 1 BB, 1 other should have sunk alone without any help (and it occured) and 5 other BB were very very badly damaged, so we are very near historical damage.

For the MTB, ok but for the other one's??

I was already finding WitP to efficient with its air attack on ship, but now it is worse.
All Kate (100% of success) got hits on ships at a 6000 feet altitude.
With WitP, some would failed the attack and most ships would have been seriously damaged with a small chance to reach a safe port for repair.
With AE, NO [:(]

So, i have 2 questions:
how, in AE, the Neosho will survive the jap strike coming from Zuikaku and Shokaku during Coral sea battle??
How Kurita's fleet in october 44, in the Subiyan sea, in spite of heavy naval attack coming from a big part of the US CV planes, will managed to perform its raid on Leyte golf with only the lost of the Musashi and some other damage on the other war ships?

Here is a very realistic PT boat attack.
No torpedo hits because very fast enemy ships (the day before, ships were slow). But also, all PT boat managed to escape and slalom between salvo.

In spite of many submarine between Philippines and Formosa, only a couple of succesful hit. Enemy freighters have escort.
At the opposite, japanese ASW is not efficient, many sub grenades but no hits.

So, we have 2 raids with 33 139 WH-3, first intercepted by 38 light jap fighters (Oscar and Nate) and the second raid, by 12 fighters.

But, in fact, the losses are not 18 planes killed (which is already much) but 31 and 28 by air to air combat, so nearly all planes launched.[X(]

The weapons of jap fighter are mainly 7.7mm gun and some 12.7mm for some kind of Oscar.
To my opinion, with WitP, there should probably have had 15 kills.
IRL, hum, difficult to say but i can imagine 6 or 7 bombers directly killed, more than twice more or less damaged among which 4 or 5 would have crashed before home.
So, 12 planes killed seems to me a good estimation, but not 28.

In the game, the 139 WH-3 has no armor and a durability less than a Betty
