Yes...determination was made that the Allies had too much early war flexibility in the 1st relase version...so SOME of their bigger free units now have to be paid for.

Is there a list of which one now cost money, so that I may go into the editor and make them free again?

Well if you want to do that, why not just make whatever ones you want free?

Treespider,

I tend to play versus AI as the allies for the most part. I also play as close to "historical" as I can regarding unit deployments and planning future offensives. I wont be looking at invading Japan in 44! I know most folks do not just want to replicate history but learning more WW2 history is one of the great things that WITP, all its mods, and now AE has done for all of us and I like to play it out. [:)]

Just wondering how you folks look at PPs when you attempt to handle issues like this one. If I spend my PPs to achieve historical results do we have enough? I won't spend 150 PPs to dump Percival at Singapore etc. But 1198 PPs to get the 41st Div to Melbourne via the QE in mid March, as happened in 1942 looks to be beyond what the allied player can do even if we guard the PPs we get very carefully. As you mention I know we can "adjust" what we like via the editor and I do this with production a bit, just curious as to how close the developers have scrutinized the PPs we get versus what was accomplished in 1942.

Thanks for all the effort the team has invested in AE!!

I am more interested in historical accuracy than game play balance. If did cost political points to get use of 41st than I would put PPs on it. If it did not, meaning the unit was available, I would not put any PPs on it. It really as simple as that!

Basically the 41st was made available to keep the Aussies from pulling a division or two out of North Africa to protect Australia.

If it "costs" to get the 41st now, then give us the Ozzie Division in Aden for free.

I agree, so do Will, Penny, and the Robot.

The Japs are rampaging through the Central Pacific and threatening OZ much sooner than they did historically and units that should be available are being even more restricted? Nobody would dare suggest "Europe First" had the enemy in the Pacific been so formidable.

Political Points should only be needed to make moves that were politically difficult. Otherwise just back off the arrival date or disable even more of the squads if you must accomodate the PBEM players. Although a seperate "play balanced" scenario is what has always been needed, instead of trying to find a sweet spot between two camps that can never both be satisfied. The 41st with its 40 EXP will be left in Tacoma for at least a couple of months to train and build up by anyone paying attention. 1200 points to buy a division that was one of the first to go out is totally unacceptable.

I need all my PPs to convert OZ bases to their proper HQs when the time comes. Unless they switch automatically now. If so... then... nevermind. :)

Instead put the 41st Division back with a Pacific Command (not necessarily SWOPAC) but instead drop its efficiency down to about 30. By Australian standards (or at least those of the AIF) it was a notably unprepared unit when it arrived.
I may have missed something - do Aden/Aussie brigades now need point expenditure?

Gents;

Do the HQs the units are assigned to in AE ever change "automatically" to a non restricted headquarters? I recall this feature happening to a few of the Australian Divisions and the Kiwi brigades way back in PACWAR.

Thanks!

As Tree said, it's intentional.

The rule-of-thumb is for any US LCU (especially Division) that is on-map substantially before it deployed to the Pacific to start as 'restricted.' The 41st is on-map at game start and didn't deploy for over 3 months. So that qualifies. If you focus saving up PPs to release the 41st, you can still release it ahead of its real-life timetable.

Also, there are other US LCUs on-map that you will be still able to release well ahead of their historic timetable (the 40th Division, for example, which didn't leave the West Coast in real-life until September).

We'll keep an eye on PPs and the impact on game-play, but from a historical perspective, at least, the change is more realistic.

No. Early on the Grand Poobahs of AE Design decided to minimize hard-coding. A good call, IMHO.

Just a note on EXP. In AE we strove for some consistency. The maximum EXP for a peacetime unit was "50" (excepting elite units like Marines). Even a 50 is far below "Australian standards" (70+) for a unit with combat experience.

The 41st had been mobilized and training since September of 1940 -- well over a year -- when war broke out. To reduce it below "40" would put it on par with the Filipino divisions -- which each had one regiment that had been mobolized for 3 months, one for one month, and one that was still organizing.

And no -- the AIF reinforcements still arrive unrestricted.

Penny thinks you're "hot", but I've programmed the Robot to rip your limbs off if you touch her without spending the PP to get me off this ship and in a nice BIG port with plenty of naval support (Robot is a bit outsized).

In my GC game (aggresive Jap AI one) it attached as Pacific and seems to have no restrictions moving it. I have subdivided it too so I can at least get some of it too Noumea in case the crazy AI lands there. In your game it is attached to the West Coast?

BlackHorse;

Thanks for keeping an eye on this. I have not gotten past January 42 yet with the beta but I am "feeling" a bit "overestricted" [:)] I think the realistic reasons of supply, shipping, and a decent base size to put a division size formatiion of troops at should meter the flow of the Allied LCUs not PPs for those that did move historically prior to summer of 42.

PPs for extra troops ok, but looking at the regiments that formed the Americal, the 32nd, 41st, (Australlia) 37th (Suva), 27th (Hawaii) and the early Marines it seems like overkill. Nailing the 24th and 25th to Hawaii ok. Each division costs 75% of a months worth of PPs leaving a thin margin for putting Nimitz in CINCPAC, Wavell at ABDA, firing Short and sending a bunch of junior officers back to the club and replacing them with field grade leaders in many squadrons and ships!

It is enjoyable sweating out the PPs in AE and the "right" balance seems important to me.

All the best!
