i just fought in a battle where i had 27,000 troops in my army with good generals and at brigade level detail, but didn't have any supply units.

Is this normal, or a bug?

How am i supposed to supply my troops without a supply unit? I ended up supplying in villages, but that doesn't seem realistic that i wouldn't have at least 1 supply unit for a 27k army.

Am i missing something? i would have expected at least 1 supply unit.

You need to have supply a depot near the battlefield to get the army supply units.
There is an individual unit upgrade which permanently attaches supply wagons to a division. I have not tried that yet, but you may still have supply with such a unit even if you had not built supply depots.
