Does anything less than 100 R&D points for aircraft do anything?

If not, is it safe to shutdown/convert R&D factories until you need them?

Nope, nothing ... don't see why you would want to shut them down cause they don;t cost anything, except if you are repairing them, in which case it is 1000 supplies/ point repaired.

Remember you need them fully repaired to start accumulating R&D points.

Conversions are fine, if you don;t want to get into the whole R&D gambit.

So, minimal investment for R&D is 100 points ? That is relative high, but if they didnt cost any HI points/engines to produce until planes start rolling out of assembly line, then I think it is good investment for critical planes (read new versions of zeroes). For others planes i dont know.
Any hint which planes are good to accelerate (and at which level) from experienced player ?

How do you know how much you've accumulated for each model?

You don't ... but through some guess work you can get close to approximating. If this is the same as WITP then ...

Firstly the factory must be fully repaired.

So say you have 3 factories doing R&D
30(0) - producing R&D points
30(0) - producing R&D points
15(15)- NOT producing R&D points

So that is 60 points / month (same as plane production), so in about a month and a half, you've accumulated 100 points and will get a reduction in a month.

[Edit] And from a previous post of this regarding WITP, I haven't tested this for AE yet, but I believe it is the same ... the WITP wiki also states most of this:

# Damaged R&D factories do not supply points, so a (1)30 factory will not supply R&D points until it is fully repaired.
# More factories doing R&D are better than less. If comparing just one 30(0) or 3 * 10(0) the latter is better.
# Larger factories do not supply more points - there is no substantial difference between a 30 and a 300 R&D factory.
# Factories that are damaged but Repairs turned off do not accrue points.
# Size 30 will give about 1 point per day... you need 100 to get a month off.
# There are no limits to the R&D timetable and no dice roll at 100 points

Are you sure? the manual says:
"For every 100 development points the availability of the aircraft or engine may be moved up one month." (p. 236)

note "may" - I thought this implied a random chance, not automatic progress.

Please can a dev officially define how R&D work in AE? So is the manual wrong?

300 point R&D factory generates same amount of reduction points as 30 point R&D ? very interesing to know

Can't say i believe that tbh .. IF a size 30 factory produces 30 R+D/month , then logically a size 300 produces 300 ?? and why are 3x10 more efficient that 1 x 30 ? Working on a new model a/c in one facility would be more efficient than 3 seperate plants scattered about the country.

n01487477, no offence but do you have any proof of this ?

Rob, we boot have similiar thinking, but sone upper liminit for amount that one assemly line can produce is logical - to prebvent tu much speeded up plane "relase" compared to RL. But IMO upper limit of 100 insted of 30 will be more logical to me. (just to simuliate that if player decide to play more ahistoricaly and speed up development of crucial planes).

Bump.
Is a 30 R&D factory the same of a 300 one?
Does the R&D works like stated in the manual or as described by n01487477?
Those does not seem trivial question to me.

Bump!

I always through you needed 100 R&D points per month to have a chance at a one month advance?

Hi.
Since this game was first released there has been a LOT of speculation about the R&D system, and as far as I know there has never been a definitive answer to it..

Guys,
Do what I do and get testing in a sand-box ... it is easy enough to set up, sure you will have to run a few turns[:D].

Finally, I said two things, Firstly my tests were done in WITP, not AE.
Secondly ... there is no substantial difference between a 30 and a 300 R&D factory.

I may be wrong, being spoon fed is fine, but working things out is much more interesting[;)] & coming to the table with something to discuss will spark my continued interest in testing

I think we would like to hear how it's suppose to work from one of the developers!

Hope that happens too, but from my WITP experience with this issue, I don't believe a Developer has ever talked about this particular game mechanic ... doesn't mean it will never happen, but maybe they like the cloak and dagger to keep people experimenting and asking questions

We are just of two different philosophies Pad152 [;)]

We are not discussing about being generic on some game subject, like R&D (that's fine for me), we are saying that the statements about R&D in the game manual are totally wrong if your testing are correct.
That's a bit different IMHO.
Expanding and repairing a 300 R&D factory is a huge investment in resources in game terms for the japanese, it would be nice to know - officially - if this is a waste of time because it's the same of a 30 R&D factory.

Bye

Damian - does tracker give us any ability to determine how many "development points" have been accrued?  I'm sure the number is tagged in the database somehow.  I have run a couple of months test in AE where I set up 3 factories, each of size 800 and each working on one late war Japanese plane type (like 10/45 and later) and set the scenario start date to end '44.  I ran two months and saw no advancement of any plane by R&D and thus concluded that plane R&D in AE was useless.  Of course, if a size 800 factory is no more useful than a size 30 factory then this would make sense that I saw no advancement.  Note I would have generated approximately 4,800 dev points in these two months (or 48 "tries" at 100) so I suppose if the advancement chance is less than 2% per "try" for planes about 1 year out then I may not have run the test long enough.
