FOW

Not a WitPAE player but played UV for some time. I just enjoy reading the AAR's. Some very exciting reports.

But the reasons for writing in this forum are.
Is there anybody out there who can tell what the FOW is really about?

I know from other games you don't see all the info on the map. But reports of ships being sunk only to reappear somewhere else sounds interesting.

How good is the intel you get and how does it work?

How much time is spent on each turn? How much micromanagement is needed for the game?

Thinking of buying but just need to know how much free time my GF will need to let me have.[:D]

for the time used: the first turn 6-8 hours (as allied) 12-16 as japan. after that it vary from two hours to 10 min, depending if i've operation to check or only awaiting the piece arrive in place.
High level of micromanagment, but with method the time can be reduced to acceptable most of the time.

For FOW you should probably read this one: tm.asp?m=2228814&mpage=1&key=&#2228814

I started the thread with some questions but unfortunatly noone of the Dev Team answered, but could be usefull anyway ;)

Fog of war in this game makes all reports near useless.

In the Guadalcanal scenario, I was able to ambush a Japanese troop reinforcements bound for Guadalcanal using the sigint reports. But then again, the sigint reports never seem to tell me when KB leaves Truk and I've resorted to setting up sub pickets instead.

So the FOW is a matter of taste then. I read in the other link, posted by Wittman, that it can be turned off to a certain degree.

The Intel is then depending on where your picketline is placed? Aircraft and subs spotting certain movements, or do you get a message at the begininning of a round informing you what may have been sighted?

You have signal intelligence, operational reports, and enemy units of the map to help you make sense of what's going on. For the Guadalcanal scenario, I add sub pickets to augment this information. If I was playing the Grand Campaign, I would probably still have some sub pickets, but would only use them during major operations since there aren't enough subs available to carry out anti-shipping patrols and continuous picket duty.

Below are examples of both Sigint and Operational Reports...

Thanks for the rapid response.

I gather from all the responses that it seems to be a "fun" game to play.
Just that the learning curve is very steep, similar to UV in some aspects but much grander. Not sure if I can find the time for a PBEM, unless the game can be saved during the turn. A few hours per turn will not be easy.

But I will keep my eye on this forum. Busy and very much alive.

Thanks once again.

Mathew

Thinking of buying but just need to know how much free time my GF will need to let me have.

You'll have to lose the girlfriend. They are incompatible with WitP AE.

Now, if she happens to be a wargamer, then you have it made. Otherwise, game over!

The turns can be saved while you are working on them. Once you are satisfied with the turn, you hit a button to end the orders phase of the turn.

LOL. Nice answer.

Well she did just help me buy my new pc. So I think she approves of my "hobby", but life can be very demanding. Maybe I'll just have to buy her a bunch of flowers every now and then. And throw in a box of chocolates too.

As from the thread i posted before, i also believe that approx. 25% of the report informations you are see are false..i can't prove it, but it's a guess. I am still analyse that stuff. Practical example for the Allies: grab a Text Crawler tool of your choice, pick four ( or more) Japanese LCUs which are fighting and appears "regulary" in the reports, make a search over all your saved reports in SAVE directory and track and compare them with the in-game appearance...sooner or later you have a good guess what is true and what not....long term...just my 2 cents

With the changes in the FOW. On your intell tab screen, under ship sunk. Is that set in concrete. In other words once it shows a enemy ship sunk then is it certain that it is? Trying to make sure access damage to the Jap player correctly[:D]

No, absolutely not. There is so much fog of war on what ships are sunk and not sunk that even the code gets a little confused. Not to worry, we'll fix the code. For the player - reports are as accurate as wartime damage reports usually are.
