A Canuck vs The Reich!
Ok so after some major research and quite a few questions posed on the forums and with some excellant answers provided which helped me understand on how to get started initially I have begun the Allied 1943 Long Campaign controlling the Allied Airforces located in England and in the Mediterranean areas.
I am going to attempt to track my progress and report it in the form of an AAR here as well.
My planning for Day one started off small so I can get a better handle on bombing missions, assigning escorts and seeing where the Luftwaffe are operating from. I have kept the missions close to the coast to take advantage of escort coverage as best as possible. Here is the list of my Day One Targets. As you will notice there are no recon missions planned. I want to wait to bad weather days and also to see where I should be concentrating my recon. It is a long campaign afterall.
I should mention that I am a complete Noob to this game but I do have quite a lot of wargaming experience dating back further than I care to admit [:)]

So the missions have taken off and watching the turn go by at message setting 3 and time set at 1 so I could watch where the interceptors were taking off from. During the day the Luftwaffe sortied from 16 airfields in various forms. I tasked one Fighter sweep which did nothing as there were no planes there to attack. On Day 2 I will task a few more FS over the airfields I noted during Day 1.
The same thing happened during the night phase of my turn as well. About 18 airfields sortied planes to attack my night bombing missions.
My results were not too bad considering the limits of my attacks. Until such a time that longer range escorts the Mighty 8th will not venture to far inland or until some holes can be punched through the German defenses. Time will tell.

Bombing results were better than expected due to the limited scope of my attacks.

And finally the air losses for the day.

Looking ahead to Day 2 of the campaign I am going to focus on some FS on some of the airfields I identified during Day 1 assuming they are still based at those airfields. Also it will depend on the weather. for turn 2.
I wecome anyone to comment or suggest things to me as this continues. I will update as time allows.

Good work! You might want to pile on escorts a little deeper as you get excited about bombing away from the coast.
FSs are at their best at this stage of the game. Multiples aren't a bad idea but there will be surprises out there. The AI moves its units quickly so that some of your targets will move before you can get to them. Keep trying.

Hi Carl,
I certainly will. I have only processed one day. Life keeps getting in the way.. [:)] Lots of clouds over Northern Europe so may just run some recon and see about some FS over the airbases I id'd and go from there.

The AA gets worse over the AFs with time. You can hit the close ones with raids at 500 if you are a risk taker. I don't like to give hte LW a day off.

Do you mean with Bombers or Fighter sweeps when hitting under 500? Running a few experiments to see what happens.

I noticed you sent Bomber Command after Industry targets rather than Area targets. Where those fuel sites within urban areas or were you trying your luck against targets out in the country side?

I found using a couple of BC groups with radar and high morale at V.Low altitude I was able to obliterate targets outside of cities. Its a risk....A BIG RISK, cause if the target has light AA or a lot of ballons your bombers will be chewed up, and even then then can crash into terrain at that Alt. But on the few occaisons where I thought it was worth the risk I got 2 or 3 groups of Lancs in on the deck and devistated the target for the loss of 3 or 4 bombers to balloons.
Sir Charles portal of 5 Group was advocating that for some time IRL - low level precision bombing.

I mean FSs under the cloud cover. Sometimes you can also scoot your Tiffies in to take out all those Radar stations. If you want to try knocking down radar, it can help some in the early game. But it takes a while, a lot of attention and trying. Plus they build back up so you've got to keep reconning them.
I used to be able to flatten targets with 617 squadron outside of cities, coming in at low level. It doesn't work more than a couple of times because they get pounded doing this. Still you might be able to knock out 1 or 2 big scorers so that you don't need to worry about an early game loss.
Generally though, you've just got to use the NBs to flatten cities. The terror points are easy to gather and also help in the early game to avoid an early loss.
