In our pbem game, Italy joined the Axis. This happened either during my opponents turn 35 or in the interturn between turns 35&36. The first I knew of the event (I'm Axis leader) was at the naval screen when the Italian fleets in the Med ran into British and French fleets.
I took control of Italy as Player 1 but when I end my gameturn as Germany, the game asks me to send the pbem directory to the Italian player (Player 0.)
Who is Player 0 and how do I bring Italy under my control as Player 1?
I'm posting this here because I don't regard it as a bug (faulty software), just as a player not understanding how to use the software.

UPDATE:
My opponent gave me a workaround.
 
As German, as soon as your gameturn opens, set the Italian control to Human, Player 4. Before closing your German gameturn, set Italy to Human, Player 1.
I have no idea why or how this works, but it does.
