Urgent Help on Ship Withdrawal

Need some emergency advice. Its Feb 3 1941, playing as the Allies. The AP Dominion Monarch has to be withdrawn. She is sitting in Colombo ready to go but has 26 Flt and 6 Eng damage due to a sub attack. I can't withdraw it as there is no withdrawal button. What am I supposed to do? Can I withdraw an alternative ship or do I have to lose 20pp per day for the 50 days it will take to be repaired? Anybody got any ideas?
Rgds

Well, since it's February 1941, the war hasn't even begun yet so you can refuse to obey the order.
Or, if it is actually February 1942, send her to Bombay. She can be withdrawn from Bombay but not Colombo. Her damage is light enough that there's no risk in the move other than the usual risk of subs.

It says any National home base. isn't Colombo a home base? Does it have to be Karachi?

The rules say that you have to send the ship either to an off map location or to a home base of a nation. I don't think that Colombo is a homebase, but Bombay should be. So send it there and the withrawal button should light up.
Hope I'm right

The original concept of ship withdrawal required that the ship first be moved off map. This was to prevent any exploits where a player might avoid risks of enemy action between the base and the map. However this caused players some problems and it was decided (over my objections) to allow ships to be withdrawn from a few select on-map bases. Karachi is the base in the Indian Ocean.
It continues to be a problem for players and we will be loosening this even more in the next patch. Ships will be able to be withdrawn from any port in the historical "off to Atlantic" regions - US/Canadian West Coast, South Australia and Perth, and Ceylon/Western India. Port size restrictions will be used to ensure withdrawal only from a major base, and that base can not be under enemy threat. The ship itself may not be withdrawn from on-map if it is so badly damaged that it could not reasonable make the trip to an off map port The intent is to emulate the historical ports from which ships departed the theatre, but no block use of withdrawal as a way of escaping enemy action or imminent sinking.

Hmm, I'm pretty sure you can withdraw from Bombay - I know you could in WitP and I think I have in AE (or maybe I've already hopelessly confused my experiences in the two games).

Clarification on Withdrawl: It can be ANY national home base, regardless of the nationality of the ship, correct?

Question Don, Can Joseph P. Dickman be withdrawn from Aden or does the player need to wait until May of '43 when the Med opens to withdraw from that port?
The withdraw date for that ship is less than two weeks away in my game and she needs get steam up.[;)]
Thanks![:)]

Correct. You can withdraw ships of any nationality from any valid withdrawal port. US ships from Karachi, for instance or Dutch ones from San Francisco. It is the port that is important.

Yes! For example, I have withdrawn several USN subs from Sydney.
Oops - post collision.

Good question. I'm not sure, we (OK, I) may have failed to check for that....

I just dug up some old saves and looked it over. You can withdraw from Aden as it stands.

And some time later in a holding box.

I don't know if it's intended with the Med being closed but we can withdraw currently. Thanks Don.

To be 100% historical we ought to prevent withdrawals from Aden until the Med opens. But we are already moving the other way to allow more withdrawals from on-map ports. So let's just say that withdrawals from Aden happen by movement down the coast of Africa to Capetown and forget I ever mentioned it.

I'm in agreement with you on this Don, these ship withdraws are known on the first shot so the allied player needs to plan for this and should be done off map to prevent the allied player from gaining some phantom escorts. I like fairness so my opponent will not see me withdraw anything from Aden/Abadan until the med opens or anything on map at all.

If they were counting votes I would also vote with you on this.

I don't think Bombay works in AE, you have to return to either Karachi or Aden.

So what happens if the ship is too damaged or in the wrong part of the world. Is it possible to withdraw an alternate or does it have to be that specific vessel?

In AE it's that specific vessel. Basically you have orders from above your level - read 'em & weep!

Don't make Aden a specific exception. You all have already gone out of the way to provide for historic withdrawals of particular ships at specific times. To me, the objective is solely to have the ship withdrawn by a particular date so it can no longer be used. Who give's a rat's fart about how or from where the ship is withdrawn? I've already got enough to worry about without having to concern myself with whether Aden is open to the Med or whether withdrawing at San Francisco would mean the ship was too far away for it to participate in the North African invasion a week later. Keep it simple pleeze.
