How do plane upgrades work in the editor?

There are a few air groups (The Audax and Wapatia in India and some of the F2A and F4F Marine groups) that don't upgrade to anything, or upgrade to only a few of the plane types that they'd normally upgrade to. (even with player defined upgrades on.)

How can I tell if a group is being restricted to what it can upgrade to? The drop down list is not very helpful. Some groups have the same plane type for their upgrade, some have the next logical step in the chain. The other choices are weird. for example:

The F4F-3 upgrades to the F4F-4 (normally). The upgrade drop down list will show '00-F4F-4' then '01 - Upgrade 2' then '02 - Upgrade 3'

Basically, i'm trying to get it so that all airgroups can upgrade to any normal choice when player defined upgrades is on. There are quite a few airgroups that don't allow that and I can't figure out how to fix them.

I figured it out, for any who care.

US Marine air groups will only upgrade to the planes in their upgrade list. PDU allows any upgrade path for plane types and plane nationalities included. There are no "marine" aircraft. All Marine air groups use US Navy planes. (same as Indian air groups, they use British planes).

The only way to have these air groups upgrade freely is to either create Marine aircraft or change the air groups to US Navy nationality.

In the editor you can define plane upgrades by aircraft type and also by air group, if the PDU (player defined upgrades) option is off, not all air groups will upgrade to each new aircraft type.
 

PDU allows a player to upgrade a plane to any plane that is the same type, and the same nationality. Since there are no "us marine" or "indian" or "commonwealth" planes, those air groups with those 3 nationalities will only up grade to the planes listed in their upgrade path, not all the planes you might think. In the editor, I just changed those "nationalities" to 'us navy' and 'british'.

There are 2 or 3 British Vildebeast groups that will not upgrade to swordfish or albacore, and I can't figure them out right now, though.

There are Dutch ones like that too. I want to set it up so that get the older models of the P-40 if they get out of Java.
