Effects of Generals.

I need some clarification on effects of generals.
In the manual 4 star generals will affect all units in an area.
3 star generals will affect all units in the army they command.
2 star generals will affect the divisions in the corp they command.
1 star generals when assigned to an army will affect a randomly determined division in that army.
This is my question: I've seen some players put their excess 2 star generals in an army even though that army has no corps to command.
Will those generals effect the army? i.e. will they be randomly assigned to divisions as 1 star generals are, or will they have no effect on that army?
Likewise, if an army has 2 or more 3 star generals will only 1 effect the army, and then the other generals effects are wasted?
Thanks.

I believe that 2 stars have the effect of 1 stars when assigned to an army (ie. they can help only 1 division assigned at random).

Excess 3 stars are the same way when assigned to a army (ie. as a 1 star), however, if assigned to a corps I believe they act as a 2 star (ie. corps commander)

Thanks Ewalt, thats good to know. Considering how non creative computers are, and not having read it in the manuel it made me wonder! Didn't want to put useless leaders in armies that they have no effect upon, and then have them get captured for nothing!

Quick combat generals work different than detailed combat.

There are "tactical bonuses" you win in quick/instant combat according to your top 3 generals vs the other sides top 3 generals. Rallying also seems to work a bit differently in quick/instant.

The bonuses for the container for initiative bonuses and other "strategic level" issues remain the same.

Didn't know about the difference in quick combat.

Top 3 vs Top 3? Does that mean you don't need more than 3 generals per army?

I suppose not, although if you were moving around multiple armies with corps both "underneath" and detached in your OOB you would still want leaders in each container as you wouldn't be sure which containers for sure would be involved in any given engagement. Plus there are still strategic level benefits (like for initiative) that having more leaders could help with.
