Loss relations

In the combat resolution, the defender takes losses according to a certain table. Then the attacker takes losses in relation to the defender's losses according to a second table.
But is the latter calculated on basis of theory (figure in defenders table matched with attacker's die roll) or reality (defender's actual loss matched with attacker's die roll)?
