Good luck then, and thanks!

Play one of the small scenarios. They will get you started on the steep learning curve.

Maybe? That was in the advertising. I'm not so sure with a game of this complexity the tutorial is a maybe, especially since it WAS advertised. I can learn how to play it without one, but the tutorial is what prompted me to buy it in the first place. It can't be that tough to do one.

Not sure that is a workable solution - fortunately I have the older War in the Pacific and can reload that and relearn the game - for those that don't...

There are several small scenarios in AE. Coral Sea and Guadacanal is what I used to learn AE.

Understand your point - but still problematic - let's say I know nothing about the game and I load up the Coral Sea scenario...

Now what?

Accept you're in at the deep end!
Luckily you're not quite far away from shallower waters.
Very likely you know how to tread water and stay afloat. That's when you start experimenting with the toggles and guesstimate what will happen when you move the pieces a bit. Don't be surprised when you gulp a lot of water and maybe even sink sometimes. Keep treading the water and enjoy the little successes! Like actually loading and unloading that precious troops to where you want them. Of course that's when you find out the port size is not allowing your ships to dock but keep treading the water and you will learn to swim.

Later you will start asking some smart ass questions on game design changes . . . [;)]

Translation; accept it'll take time, patience, experimenting, failure, reading the manual and great enjoyment when something little actually succeeds!

At one point, they DID say the tutorial was going to be in the 2nd patch.

But that was a while back . . . .

I so totally appreciate what people are saying here about diving in... I can almost hear the relish at the idea of having to learn all over again bit by bit :) that's why I love coming here and reading and taking my Coral Sea scenario bit by bit by bit, and diving into the manual at different pages and trying to just -grok- the level of modelling and simulation I'm entering here. So I am very much enjoying myself. But I love tutorials! Sometimes I purchase a game and only really play the tutorial and a few bits. That may sound funny to some folks, but I am not a hardcore gamer in that sense - I have programmed a computer to play (bad) chess because I am an algorithmic thinker who enjoys very clever simulations for what they achieve before I am a gamer, I suppose. So I enjoy the depth eveyrone here achieves, and my own small steps - but the tutorial is for me - at least - also a walking demonstration of the filigree and excellence of the modeling attained. That's why I look forward to it, and while I hope to learn and play for that part of the enjoyment, the tutorial promised me a demonstration of the wonders achieved in this game design, and that's what I personally enjoy most in a game. So I also hope more than "maybe" :) This is also my thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences so openly on the forums and allowing us lurkers to warm our hands on your experiences against the algorithms and excellent design work. There are so many ways, to enjoy deep algorithmic excellence - and immense knowledge representation as achieved on WITP :) xKabs

I agree a tutorial is very much needed. This game is far too complex for most newbies. I know when I first started I had no idea how to proceed and it took me months to get going on a large campaign because I was afraid to start without understanding how to play. The tutorials in WITP weren't too bad, but still didn't help too much.

Just think of all the additional sales you would have if people could open up the game and figure out how to play it :-)

Those of us grogs will put the time in to figure it out, but think of the potential increase in players if we just had a really good tutorial. I know, when am I going to write it. Sorry, just got a new job, so not any time soon unfortunately.

I'd prefer a mini-tutorial which concentrated on Jap industry, choices and production.  For a start, where all the aircraft factories are and what they produce (or is there a hot-key that will tell me that, i spent ages hunting around Japan at random looking for the odd aircraft factory...)

I don't wish to pile on but here I go.  I own WitP and played it enough to at least get a feel for it on a basic level.  With WitP/AE I am struggling, especially with the economics systems.  I too expected the uttorial and when I could not find it I decided I was an idiot until I learn it was not included.  I note stuck on the box about it being forth coming would have save some consternation.

i advise to read the AAR that is is in the aar forum and is about the JAP AI vs human allied. its great, super detailed, and gives a strategic overview of planning and operations for the first year of the war. Absolutely indispensable if you are looking for the 'why's' behind doing certain actions.

Can you post a link to this - there are a lot of AARs - thanks!

Let's see now, how does that really work, ha? The problem with creating a tutorial, someone has to try to explain the unexplainable!
