PBEM Intel Display bug?

I'm currently playing Guadalcanal PBEM (v 1.00.84e) as the Allies. A large number of Japanese ships are reported as sunk but the victory point display only includes 3 ships. At least some of the suppposedly sunken ships are still afloat (confirmed by my opponent) and I believe many more are, in fact, only damaged. Similarly after a recent air raid, the aircraft losses display (and my pilot kill totals) seemed to include ALL of the aircraft listed as only damaged in the Combat Report, as well as those listed as destroyed.

Is this a bug or am I misunderstanding how Fog of War works?

I think that is how it is supposed to work. I don't know for sure as it is wartime and I can't get good information. All my pilots and skippers exagerate their claims. I guess I'll just have to live with it.

The manual states that, when a ship is sunk, a date is set when this information is given to the opposing player. Until that time, the ship will not be listed as sunk and will not be reflected in the sunk ships victory points for the opposing player. (Until I get a 'loss admitted' message, I have to make my own best guess about whether an enemy ship sank, based upon the number of hits.)This makes sense and is how it works when playing against the computer (and how the old WITP worked.) In my current PBEM,however, enemy ships are being reported as lost as soon as I damage them but I don't get any points for them. (I don't seem to get any 'ship sinks' messages during play.I get the impression that my opponent, the Japanese player, is seeing the information displayed correctly.)I take your point about FOW, but I cannot believe that this is how the game is meant to work, as it makes the Intel screen meaningless.

Sounds realistic [:D]

Per Holmes, Double-Edged Secrets, even when he had decrypts discussing re-arming a cruiser at Kure he could not get it placed back in the OOB since the pilots "knew" it had been sunk. So he kept two sets of books: one reflecting his best estimate based upon SIGINT and the other that was acceptable to the pilot community.

If you are playing with fog of war "on", you will recieve inaccurate reports that approximate the inaccuracies of war time reporting. Ships not sunk reported as sunk, wrong ship reported (a carrier actually sunk but the report gives the wrong one) or delayed reporting of actual ships sunk (which is the old WITP way).

It makes sense when you put it that way, unfortunately the manual implies that it works like the old WITP! Will a ship that is incorrectly reported as sunk eventually be removed from the sunk ships list, or will it stay on there permanently?

Incorrectly reported sinkings are removed if the ship is sighted again. It's happened to me several times when playing the AI.
