IIRC historically the Allies avoided area bombing French cities to avoid future political issues with the French. Are there no drawbacks to bombing the crap out of French cites for Terror Points?

You get NO terror points for bombing occupied countries. Germany, Romania, Hungary and Italy are fair game. in the original ther was a flaw that gave terror point for bombing Greece as well, not sure if thats in still.

You can bomb France and the low countries to try to hit Rail yards and industry, but you get no "Brownie Points" for collateral damage.

Did I miss that in the manual? Or is it an undocumented feature?

HS didn't have much control over what went in the manual; that was largely a up to the management. But if he had had to do that as well as everything else that was on his plate, you [you in general that is, not neccesarily you in particular] would still be moaning that the game wasn't out yet.

There are a lot of features and facets to this game that are not described or detailed in the Manual. Just my humble opinion but with good reason. I dont think I have encountered very many games of this level with as many ways you can win or lose in the playing.

Most of GG's games have tremendous depth and breadth and are meant to be a mental challenge. Typically how the playing pieces may be used are described but not much is said about the "How" to obtain effective and good results towards winning a game. IMHO the idea being to place you the player in the role of the overall Commander of the forces of the side you are playing. You learn by doing what strategies and tactics work and dont work.

In this game for example, BTR specifically, if you run only the 44 Long Campaign you miss a lot of the flavor of the game that is to be had by starting in the 43 Long Campaign. You learn first hand why some things were done and why some were not. IMHO the Introductory 1 Day Game is extremely beneficial for the Allied player. It teaches you right away that you are going to get hurt badly if you follow Dohet's Doctrine. The Attack Bombers can not go it alone, they must have Fighter Escorts to consistently operate effectively.

In the playing of this game you also learn that there is a price to be paid to win. How costly that price may be is directly proportional to your ability to learn, adapt and overcome. And I dont mean by pulling a Kirk and re-writing the code. I mean by dealing with your losses and looking very hard at how you screwed up to cause them and then figure a different way. Then wash, rinse & repeat until you either win or lose.

So I do think that a great level of detail was purposely left out of the manual with the specific reasoning to enhance your emmersion and enjoyment of play in this game.

Agree that the manual is lacking.
But I can already play and learn the game quickly.
Do no agree that you need evey bit of detail in the manual.
Especially calculations and such.

This is not really directed at you...

If you wanted to find out about "terror" bombing France, then do it. Now watch your Terror points. Notice they go down?
Now, you can really pile on the raids, and the points still go down. "Somethings not right!"
You have probably "wasted" a week of game time by now. If you give up.
But, if you had also been bombing troops, you might have noticed the troop's disruption is recovering a little slower than before.

Good point. Back in the day, the commanders didn't have the "game manual" with them when playing out WW2.

Perhaps someone could put some country lines in graphic for the map, as it is a pain to try and figure out if a given city is German or what. For example, I pretty much remember that Nijmegen is Dutch, but I have no clue if Wesel is in Germany or Netherlands. Similarly, I know that Kiel is in Germany, but I dunno about Flensburg - may be Dannish, may be not. And so forth.

After all, the actual commanders had some borders in their maps.

Agreed, but they did have a plehtora of aviation experts, economists, a staff of West Point graduates, etc., to call upon and ask their opinion.
