Ok guys, I made a little spreadsheet linked to some of my other spreadsheets to compute how much HI I have left over at the end of the month as I modify my economy. Here's what I use:

Engines
Airframes
Vehicle points
Armament points
Shipyards
Pilots

I know you use a bit of HI to increase HI factories and don't plan on doing that right away (if at all). I'm showing a 240k HI surplus per month. I have to be missing something huge but can't figure it out. And yes, I am calculating for the entire month, not just one day.

Shipyards - Naval and Merchant???

Yup, got it.  Here's what I did:
 
HI Production - 6950*2*30 = 417000
 
HI Use
Engines - 685*18 = 12330
1E Airframes - 289*18 = 5202
2E Airframes - 148*36 = 5328
4E Airframes - 12*72 = 864
Vehicle points - 26*6*30 = 4680
Armament points - 195*6*30 = 35100
Shipyards (Merchant + Naval) = (616+363)*3*30 = 88110
Pilots - 4140*5 = 20700
 
Total Used per month = 172314
 
Surplus = 417000-172314 = 244686 [X(]

Save em up....cause in 1944 when the US subs have good torpedos you won't have the resources to make anymore...[;)]

I checked my game in April I have 72 and 620 respectively...and I did not expand them.

I figured it out!  My spreadsheet for all the yards wasn't totalling everything.  Here are the real numbers:
 
HI Production - 6950*2*30 = 417000

HI Use
Engines - 685*18 = 12330
1E Airframes - 289*18 = 5202
2E Airframes - 148*36 = 5328
4E Airframes - 12*72 = 864
Vehicle points - 72*6*30 = 12960
Armament points - 620*6*30 = 111600
Shipyards (Merchant + Naval) = (807+1384)*3*30 = 197190
Pilots - 4140*5 = 20700

Total Used per month = 366174

Surplus = 417000-366174 = 50826

Your merchant is light. You start with way more than 616. You need all of your merchant shipyards and then some to avoid delays in merchant builds. Need to stockpile from the beginning to handle the peak.

Of course, if you decide you don't want to build out all your merchies then you would need less shipyard (and then it would make sense that would add to your HI surplus)

I'm basing that on 150 IJN pilots and 195 IJA pilots a month that begin training.
