In preparation for UV, and to familiarize myself with submarine warfare in the south pacific, I bought a copy of the 1996 SSI game Silent Hunter. Unfortunatley, it does not work under windows millenium at all and under windows 98 there is no sound. Does anyone have any experience with this game. Am I missing alot of fun?
theres a way

Silent Hunter, good game, much better than the currently released second one
You need to set your soundcard to SoundBlaster 16 emulation
worked for me. Hope this helps.

first go to MY COMPUTER, then CONTROL PANEL, then SYSTEM DEVICE MANAGER, and there find sb16 emulation, I have SBlive!
so it permits you to mulate sb16.
good luck

I never have had any luck with legacy games that would run on Win95 but not with WinME. At least I never could configure Matrix's PacWar to run with correct memory. Believe me I tried many times, so long to a great GG game, hello to UV and PacWar's grandson, WITP!!!

They still like that after the patches? I gave up when they took so long to do anything about SH2. Thought DC might be improved, but most of the same stuff that pissed me off about SH2 were still there.

They are NOT dogs !!!! Sure, they could have been better
but many circumstances hindered their ability to be the
great sims they should have been. I can name dozens of
games that were worse. Neverless, I have had many hours
of fun playing these games and creating new scenarios.
They are the "Combat Mission" of the sea. 60 years ago,
men were losing their LIVES over equipment deficiencys and
we are worrying about GAMES !!!!!

just found out that Windows ME does not support ms-dos games. One must create boot disc, mouse program (not in windows) and move all files off the CD. On the boot disc one needs to allocate more memory (i am not sure how to do this).
That is why PACWAR and SH dont work. I dont think I will bother any more, because next week something much better is coming along!!!

Circumstances are no excuse.
Is there still that British fleet in those islands? You know the fleet with a carrier where only one of the four destroyers chases you and usually ends up running aground so you can sink the carrier at you leisure? And then after getting back to port you haven't accomplished your mission because you didn't sink X tons of merchant shipping and you have to start the mission all over again?

A Tactical game like DC or SH2 is only a fragment of WW2.
The fun is in the battle, there is no big picture like in WITP.
Because of the text driven missions, I can edit any kind of
responce from the AI by using different ROE commands.
I and others have created very exiting missions, one of
the latest being the battle of Midway......

You are one loyal consumer. I'm a member of the WPL/EGL and have acknowledged the consumer backlash directed at Untimation and UBI. Both companies should be ashamed of themselves for releasing these two pigs and ignoring complaints and requests for support. They went backwards from the point reached by SHI. There are no acceptable excuses for these companies. Like politicians who win using false campaign promises, these companies should be brought to justice. I have black balled them from my hobby dollar, the best I can do. If it wasn't for the members of the Wolfpack League, and their sense of humour, I'd still be really pissed and would not have realized that both game packages DO make good book ends!:p

Getting back to the original post, I have Silent Hunter 1 Commanders Edition and it plays just fine with Windows ME.
It's more of a problem getting the right graphic and sound
card to work with this DOS-based game. I have Voodoo 5 and
SB Live. You go to DOS, enter the SILENT Directory and type
"SH". The game loads & runs really good. The thing I always
missed with this original was lack of an external view and a
TOTAL lack of any friendly ships. SH2 added these features
and I REALLY enjoy them. But I tend to play the cards I'm
dealt and accent the positive side of things. A boring game
is much worse to me than a few bugs.....

I have been thinking of picking up Silent Hunter 2, which is now selling for $19.99 most places. I loved Aces of the Deep but it will not install under WinME so I sold my copy. I have heard rumors of an Aces of the Deep 2 in development but have found no confirmation. I want a modern version of Aces of the Deep to get my Uboot fix.
Is Silent Hunter 2 worth my time if I liked Aces of the Deep? I never played the original Silent Hunter.

As a sub sim fan I have purchased all of these titles and for me AoD was the richest gaming experience mostly from the campaign game which IMO is superior to SH II's. The latter is a scripted/linear affair while AoD was much more open ended and random, i.e. when you went on patrol you did not encounter exactly the same ships, at the same positon time and course. If there are advantages to SH II over AoD it would be internet play and a bit more manual control over torpedo plots. So if you enjoy going mano a mano vs. an RN DD or DE and you like to plot out your torp runs by hand I would say it is $20.00 well spent, else wait for the next generation of WW II sub sim.
Cheers

The graphics for SH2 are much better than AoD.
As Gus said the campaign is a straight jacket. No options of what to do next - you have your orders. And the big pisser is that if you fail a mission you don't get another one - you get the same one over and over (witht he exact same setup and dates) until you succeed. Then you can go to the next mission. Much more flavor in AoD.

Brisd, many of us have SH2 and DC and we enjoy them very
much. Yes, there are a few features missing that would give
these games (sims) a more realistic feel. But I still marvel in
the way these games do & display different features they do
have. As for missions, the scenarios being text driven, they
can be edited by ANYONE that can read. In other words, you
can & will (if you own them) modify and create new & exciting
scenarios to be played single & Multi-player. As for platforms
always being in the same place, there is a mutex feature that
lets the editor create many groups in different starting places
but only some or none of them are in any given mission start-up
so It is entirely random. Many of us have created very intense
scenarios to be played single or MP. These games are the naval
version of "Combat Mission" and are great tactical sim-type games.
