The F4U was an outstanding fighter-bomber. IMO, why have dedicated bombers and fighters when one plane can do it all. It was a good dogfighter with four cannons or six machine guns and also carried bombs and rockets. The F/A-18s serving on modern carriers takes this concept of a multirole aircraft to the max.

The F4U also served in the Korean war and did well until the pesky jet Mig-15s showed up, but "On 10 September 1952, a MiG-15 made the mistake of getting into a turning contest with a Corsair piloted by Captain Jesse G. Folmar, with Folmar shooting the MiG down with his four 20 millimetre (0.79 in) cannons.[55] The MiG's wingmen quickly had their revenge, shooting down Folmar, though he bailed out and was swiftly rescued with little injury."
