Is it just me or does anyone else find the ship designs can still be improved upon (aesthetically)?

There's always room for improvement in something; but they look nice.

Also, I'd prefer more robust, solid, sleek looking ships with less protrusions, wings, spikes, modules, etcetera sticking off ships.

I much more have an issue with the way the ships seem to move in a video I saw. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8iLEvTu27c
It's like a childs invisible hand is moving them around. So much quick turns and sudden movements to one way or another. Overall, though, the game looks great.

This is a small budget game.

The graphics can be modded.

How do you know Jomni? I've only seen a few pics of the ships (that I like, actually). 12 races, many ship types, there are bound to be some neat looking ones in the mix.

Overall they're quite nice IMO. Of course, like said above, there's always room for improvement. I kind of agree with Wade for some designs, but honestly I don't feel any need to change them - well, maybe except for the Cryokon main ships [:D]

I guess I'm just a fan of Japanese mecha / ship design aesthetics in animes.
where some are sleek and look technologically advanced (for high tech races), and some are organic and look alive (for some other races). But for this game, they're just blocks or oversized jet planes / UFOs.

Seconded. The movement just doesnt seem "spacey". More inertia! :)

Not sure if you mean in battle or in the strategic map? In battle they do have tactical speed and acceleration. There is inertia. You can kind of use it to your advantage too [;)]
