"new features"?

The new features are;

Better campaign difficulty balance especially on “Easy” and “Normal”
An improved and expanded manual
Improvements to unit pathfinding for both friendly and enemy AI
Many map tweaks and changes which fix problems with units drowning themselves when ordered to cross a river or other body of water
A number of additional bug and stability fixes

Aren't these things one would have expected in the original game, and included in a "patch". Why would I pay for you to make it so units don't accidentally drown themselves, fix pathfinding and balance the game?

Convince me that I should buy this, if this is how you support your original self-admitted buggy product?

Check the 'gamespot review' thread for Erik's reply to a similar question from myself. Basically, Matrix had and have nothing to do with previous releases. They just insisted on certain improvements before publishing 'their' version.

Exactly - we had nothing to do with the earlier releases, nor do we have contact with those publishers. This is the first release of Officers we have been involved in and we made these changes and improvements in order to have it meet our standards.

As Erik says!
I can confirm, worked as a beta tester for this release, there have been certain focus areas with this release. Especially playability for newcomers or people that wants to go through on easy level. But this was only a small portion we looked into.
The most work went with path finding and the ability to get stuck as well as units drowning.
So there are lots of improvements throughout this release.
