"btr.exe has stopped working"

I've suddenly started getting this error when I try to load this game.

I have no idea what caused it, as I was happy to report some time ago that switching to Windows 7 seemed to have cured the issues I was having with speed...and now it won't work.

Nothing has changed with regard to the game itself, but something I've installed somewhere along the line must have ffected this.

Any ideas?

DXDiag attached

Meant to say I've tried adding it to the list of DEP Excution exclusions and tried running as administrator and Windows XP SP 3 compat mode.

I'm more interest in the save game - if there's some form of corruption I need to know why and how, so post that up for a look.

I'm not trying to load a save game. I'm more interested in the game not starting period as in...it doesn't run. I get the first Matrix menu, click on play and get the error. I've tried running btr.exe on it's own as well, with no luck.

I've noticed I also have a problem with Combat Mission Shock Force that was working and HoI3!

I've installed something that's broke something essentially. Which is damned annoying because I have no idea what.

What I need you guys to try and fihgure out is what your game relies on that might have been broken by installing something else!

Sorry, I misinterpreted "when I try to load this game"

I'm not sure there's much we can do if your pc has systemic errors... Have you installed a different video codec - we've seen issues with ffdshow, but that's usually a black screen, not a crash. Try removing the intro video file to see what happens.

Yeah - it's system I know. What I'm trying to determine (from all 3 game providers) is what "in common" they utilise program wsie? I know, for example, that HoI3 installs C++ runtimes...not sure at present if CMSF or BTR do. I know that HoI3 installs DirectX - unsure of BTR or CMSF.

Just trying to find a common link. Clearly I've installed something that has affected these 3 games. All my FPS games run fine. Even Smugglers IV from Matrix.

So your games are using something else that some other install has changed and now don't work...that's all I'm trying to get...what "system wise" your program might use that has been upset by another program.

I just performed a System Restore to 11/11 and no joy. I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling and still nothing.

EDBTR doesn't install anything but itself. If you want to migrate to a new computer, you only need to copy the files and registry entries. (I'm not telling you to do that - just giving an example of the simplicity of this package)

This might break the Matrix updater and other content, but it won't break the core game.

ok...renamed the video file matrixgames.wmv in the DAT\VIDEO folder and it's working now.

When you mentioned black screen, it occurred to me that I was getting a black screen, but only at res 1024x768 - so I could see my desktop round the edge (desktop res is 1280x1024) so I didn't class that as a "black screen"

Anyway, all working...don't know what's wrong with the wmv file though!

It will be a video codec or video player addon you have installed - the culprit so far has been ffdshow. You can set ffdshow to not playback wmv files, but if you're using something else then I don't know. I have Haali media splitter, ffdshow and a few others on mine without an issue, it's all down to the config I believe. I don't think it's the wmv file, it's the way it's handled by the system.

I hope you sort out your other games.
