Does anybody think that leaving German production on computer control a viable option? How would things pan out?

What are the best early changes to make if player controlled? I know it`s a personal thing bur there must be a few important changes to make early on.

All depends on your style of play.  Start a game and play the computer vs the computer.  Place it on continuous action over night and check out the German production whenever you want by turning off continuous action.  You can see for yourself then.[:)]
