Any interest in a May 1, 1942 - End Campaign?

Once I get my arse around the AE format I'd like to work on a campaign game that starts at Japan's point of consolidation of initial territorial gains vs further expansion. I believe it might make an ideal Allied vs Japanese AI scenario. Anyone interested in this? If someone has already started I'd be pleased to assist.

Ron, yes definitely interested. I believe a few of us have already asked for a 1st May '42 start GC. I think there was mention of it but whether it was serious or just speculation I'm not sure. But I'd certainly like to see it done. I will try to help if I can.

It is going to be painful to make accurate OOB and unit locations for that start, compared to Dec 7/8 41 start. Information of unit locations etc. just are not that accurate, especially on Japanese side. At least that's what Devs said last time.

I would be very interested in the Scenario.  I wouldn't worry too much about being 100% correct about the OOBs and locations of units.  In this case "close" would be good enough.  We all can use the editor to tweak things if we want; I know that I will.  I also believe that NOT having a May '42 Start Scenario is the one and only major weakness of AE; if calling this a "weakness" is even accurate.  Don't get me wrong, Matrix and the Crew did a heck of a job on this product and I will playing this game for years to come.  It's just one of the things on my personal wish-list that I would have like to have seen.  We all can't have everything.

An OOB suggestion:  why not take the WITP scenario as a "start point" for the OOB in AE?  Then add, tweak, modify, shuffle, etc. what's left from the two versions and make a "best guess" scenario.  I'll be modifing what ever is released any how.  Besides once the "base" May '42 Scenario is released, the players can make suggestions, add input, etc. and then release Version 2, or B, or 3a, or whatever.  I think that this would work just fine.  The simply great thing about AE is that it grows and improves over time.  The vast wealth of info from the Players is almost endless.  Regardless of whatever is initially released as an "Early 1942" Scenario, it will be good.

I believe CHS Nik Mod Scenario 145 from WiTP might be a good starting point. That is the May 1st '42 start that I played regularly. It might give at least some information as to basic unit and ship placement. Unfortuantely I lost a lot of my stuff after upgrading to Win 7 so I only have AE installed at the moment.

I agree with TR. The precise locations aren't that important.

In addition to the Nik Mod and the old WITP start, there's also the new Coral Sea Scenario which gives us much of the deployment of active assets.

We'll probably never get past educated guess in China but that's not the end of the world.

I've started looking into combining the info for a consensus start. Looks perfectly achievable (well to a ~95% level -- but this is always going to be something needing tweaks) though anybody waiting on me will be waiting a while.

Just in case those interested in doing scenario work weren't aware (I wasn't) you can get tabular records of movement for all of the Japanese cruisers at http://www.combinedfleet.com/Junyokan.htm (And that means records of every known movement and who went with them)

Given how useful this is I suspect that the regulars already know of this. Oh well, can't hurt.

Still have not found the time to pursue this puppy but as many of you said, complete locations not really neccesary are they? Perhaps locating units and ships in regions last known would suffice? Might make the FOW aspect at the scenario's start more in tune with what the RL commanders had intel wise.

Just a curiosity inquiry...Japanese language sources would likely have much more information on dispositions.  Any volunteers?

What if many prime naval assets (ie the 4 Midway KB CVs and Hornet/Big E ) were given 1-3 week delay arrival dates so that offensives aside from Coral Sea op were impossible enabling some ground unit relocation to enhance lack of FOW in many scenarios start ups? See where I'm going? Still allows for Midway ops etc but keeps players "honest".

Hmm, where would the delayed ships arrive, Ron? Tokyo, and West Coast USA? Or Truk/Noumea/Pearl Harbor? I'd just want to make sure both sides had enough CVs within range of the Central Pacific that they could have their own Midway if they want. Also, both should have a chance for a Coral Sea, so I suppose some CVs should start in the South Pacific.

I generally thought WITP's '42 start was reasonable, so I think that's a pretty good guide to get you going.

I'm delighted you're doing this! AE really needs an option for a May 42 start.
