Question from a new player: altitude & depth

I bought the game a few days ago and I like it a lot so far. I'm starting to understand the several systems of armement which is kind of hard because I'm very green on modern naval warfare.

Two questions:
1) For the moment I never change the default altitude for planes or the default depth for subs. Any hint on which situation does requires which adjustment ?
2) Is there some place when you can get strategy/tactics explanations (besides the obvious manual and 101 section on harpgamer) ?

Thx

It really depends on what type of plane you are using and what mission that plane is assigned.  For example, your AEW (Airborne Early Warning) planes should probably be high up since that gives them the maximum radar coverage.  Or, your strike planes might want to stay at low level so that the AI ground-based radar takes longer to spot them due to the limited radar horizon.

Welcome aboard, shipmate.  [8D]

Glad you're enjoying it. [:)]

It really does depend on the particular circumstances. You've probably noticed that your aircraft often have different cruise speeds depending on altitude. Also, generally speaking, their own radars may perform better at higher altitudes.

For submarines, the most appropriate transit depth will depend entirely on (1) local depth; and (2) sonar conditions.

In HCE, depth is simply a function of distance from land. The further away from land you are, the deeper the water. Deeper water also helps your sub maintain stealth.

Note, however, that sonar performance is also depth dependent. You might be able to hear enemy ships and submarines further away if you are in deep water, but you might also miss targets that are closer in.

Again, a lot of detail here, and we're just touching the tip of the iceberg.

Not really. General principles of naval warfare that you might find in a book or elsewhere on the Web are helpful, but they may only be broadly applicable to what happens in HCE. The Matrix and HarpGamer forums are pretty much the only places you can get HCE support and advice. If you are familar with IRC, you can drop into our IRC channel at HG for a chat.
