I am aware you build multiple research centres which can increase the amount of research , that can be adjusted by the sliders. But does buying multiple other buildings have an increasing effect i.e. if the population is about to revolt etc can you buy additional entertainment centers or security buildings and get an additional impact?

Yes to all of those
If only 1 of a building is useful, then that's all the game will allow you to build. e.g. you can only build one mine, or one scanner
