In honor of my retirment from my career as a Hero and acceptance into the Elite Guard (this is my 501st post). I thought it was appropriate to indulge in a pointless silly post.

In all of my posts, I have only gotten tangled into a forum pissing match once (it was a mistake...I told myself to take five deep breaths and grow up), posted to the Turd... I mean The Thread, twice (they were actually nice and responded kindly to my noviceness), and indulged in pointlessness about twice (OK, some of my posts are stupid, but I really try hard!)

To that end, I pose the question to those of you who were adventurous, bored, or silly enough to look in this thread: what type of ship is the most psychologically mature? Should you indulge in a reply, I am keenly interested in your rationale. [;)]

well ... um ... er ... because? I'm an amphib puke so you have to factor that in.

They are still playing, in one form or another, 60 years later. A very mature design for back than.

Any type of xAK, AK, xAP or AP. Those are in the reason of naval warfare. If they make it to their destinations, you are winning, If they are sunk, you lose.

It is that simple.

Correct, hit the 'I' key to often.

A vessel, of and by itself, has no psychological maturity. Rather, one must look to the crew for this attribute. When one considers the various classes of ships in the PTO, I submit that the submarine is the most psychologically mature.

To (mis)quote a movie viewed a long time ago who's name escapes me, the submariner's view of combat strikes me as exceptionally mature:

- Either the enemy will spot us or he won't, if he doesn't no problem.
- If he spots us he will either attack or not attack, if he doesn't no problem.
- If he does attack, either he will hit us or he won't, if he doesn't no problem.
- If he does rupture the pressure hull at a depth of 300 feet, we have no problems remaining on this earth.

This is deadly serious business Mr. Mortis and not to be taken lightly... [:D]

Most Psychologically Mature:

Using a Maslow Needs model, it is clearly AO's and late 45 AE's. Most ships, with all other needs met, aspire to achieve their mission as their highest order need. This is, by definition Self Actualization. AO's and AE's mission is to help other ships achieve their mission. That is, by defintion, Transcendence, the highest order of all needs. On top of that, AO's and AE's can satisfy their needs in the most challenging environment... underway.

And seriously Feltan! What is reality if we cannot anthropromorphize objects? The crew? who cares about the crew? With the exception of the skippers, name one crew-member that is identified in WITP AE. Clearly, ships matter most! [:D]

The Iowa class battleships are the most mature... because having 9x16" guns means never having to answer silly questions about maturity, and blowing those out of the water who ask such questions. [:D]

I guess you could take it as a variety of meanings. Anything from the ability to consent to... well, you know to the ability to respond with the appropriate emotion. It was intentionally vague in order to elicit any of a variety of responses.

Yorktown class CV. Out numbered, in some cases, out classed (because of self imposed limitations and by time!), in some instances, clumsily handled (Hornet!). Yet they took far more punishment than thought capable, and returned to action far sooner than would be expected later in the war, and suffered for doing so. Their descendants, the Essex class, showed many of the same characteristics, but were more mission capable to begin with.

Boise ? No, this ship obviously has anger issues.

Type VIII submarines? Not as mature as the Type IXs.

xAKs, xAPs, AKs, APs? The "reason for naval warfare" ? Hmm, sounds extremely narcissistic to me. Also you've got to question a ship which delivers men to a theatre of war but can't commit to staying around when combat gets closer.

Submarines in general ( or the crews which serve in them at least ) ? Hmm, that little adage sounds like an extremely cognitively distorted view of events. It seems utterly focussed on the avoidance of "problems". With maturity comes the realisation that problems have to be dealt with. Submarines are, at best, adolescent.

AOs and AEs: " AO's and AE's can satisfy their needs in the most challenging environment" Hmm, I don't know, that sounds like the tagline for a really high class hooker company. Ships which live only to "service" others are either highly dependent personality types with a need for external validation .... or engaged in the illicit "service" trade. Either way they don't tick the psychologically mature box. AOs and AEs I christen thee "Hookers of the seas".

SireChaos and his 16 inch gun mounts.... Sadly the Iowas are overcompensating for something, perhaps fear of weakness elsewhere? Maturity comes with being at peace with oneself, flaws and all.

Yorktown... I'm sorry Rev but coupling masochistic tendencies with incompetence does not emotional maturity make. At best the Yorktowns put the m into Naval S&M but not more than that.

ANd before anyone gets the wrong idea.... TONGUE IN CHEEK !!!!
