Just wondering if anyone else experienced thsi issue:
Air attacks by fighters alone against enemy airbases that contain only or mostly tactical bombers
never result in destruction or even damage to the tactical bombers. The best I have
ever achieved are a few supression points.
This has happened many times.
Any ideas/thoughts anyone?

Check the land attack value of your fighters. That is the attribute your using when attacking airfields. Unmodified it is too low to cause any units damage unless you vastly outnumber the units being attacked. Bring some bombers next time, or tech up your fighters land attack value ( not the best use of research points though IMO )
