Phantom army continues combat

I know I've run into something really bad. I have just captured Chungking and (supposedly) wiped out all the Chinese units. However, as I try to continue the game, I am continually caught up in land attacks from the vanguished / phantom Chinese units. I have opened up the game file from the Allied perspective and can see that there are no land units there, too.
Has anyone experienced something similar? More importantly, is there any way I might recover from this game or is it just too corrupt and needs to be re-started?

This hapens. Just ignore the ghost armies and continue playing.

Many thanks. I found my own work-around, too. I captured Chungking with a Deliberate attack and the game kept trying to launch them against non-existent opponents. However, the simple solution is to just order all the units to Defend and that cancels the continuous attacks. Even if I move all my units out of the hex and back in, the game still allows me to attack.
Oh, well. At least I am able to bypass this glitch without a total re-start. Whew. [:)]

I'm not sure, but I believe these ghost armies are militia's or guerilla teams. I think I read that while playing as the Japanese, if you don't have so many troops in china the militia groups tend to start popping up all over the place. I believe you'd have to check the manual for this, however I did recall the player could not use the militia, so even switching to allies you wouldn't see them, because i think they are static units.
However not entirely sure.

The garrison requirement is something different - if a base in China is not adequately garrisoned by the Japanese, then the infrastructure at that base becomes damaged.
The problem at Chungking is a bug with Chinese formations that are supposed to reappear at Chungking after being destroyed being left in limbo if the base itself is not Chinese. In both games I have played as Japan versus Allied AI, these issue has arisen. If you view the Allied (ai) side (naughty!) you can see that the units do not appear for the Allies - they only seem to fight if attacked. Even so, I have garrisoned this base heavily, just in case the units in limbo could be made to attack by the AI.
If you have problems marching from Chungking (as the game thinks it is a contested hex), make sure that units marching out the base have another Japanese held base as their destination.

Oh ok I didn't know that, I didn't bother to search the board about the militia, but somewhere I read if the garrison was not occupied then the militia would be raised throughout the country, or maybe im wrong I haven't checked the manual on it yet.

Nope, these are not militia, it's a game glitch... you can get similar problems in Russia if the Japanese invade that (and succeed)... once the "automatic" Russian activation date rolls around, similar problems pop up all over the place.

The Russian problem is similar but not quite the same. Some of Russian's original units are replaced by much larger formations, and these formations moved to new locations. This is an issue if the original units have been destroyed, they still come back at full strength, about 1 unit per day from I think 3 May. These are real on map units and can attack, but given they have no supply source, will fade quickly. I think about 30 units reappeared, mostly infantry corps with 1000 assault value.
I have a game now in September 1945 in which I took Russia in 1943, moved my troops to the new expected positions and waited for the Russian's to return. Unfortunately I deployed based upon the original Russian positions and only late searches on this forum revealed to me the Russians would move. I consequently lost Oboto, but elsewhere my troops have held and I am now clearing out the Russians starting with their weakest formations.

Well, once the units are defeated, iirc, phantom units showed up... at least for some players... hopefully this bug won't bite you.
